While some editions of The Lord of the Rings have the covers Tolkien designed, this new one is the first edition to have his illustrations. First up I wanted to talk about the actual box of the box of The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition.

Folio commissioned Hokyoung Kim for the artwork, while the late author’s wife, Wendy Benchley, provides a fascinating new introduction. It was luckily released the day before payday so I instantly bought it and waited by the door for a week for it to be delivered. Naive in style but, for my money, perfectly capturing in paint the world he so lovingly creates in words.
