Description

You’ll need a very sharp knife to cut the leather. Unless it’s a really good / specialist knife, making circular caps is probably going to be very difficult, but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can start square, then trim the corners to make an octagonal cap, and it’ll work fine. Just make sure it covers the whole tip, or very slightly overlaps, so that the beriba is protected.

You can either buy a small square of leather from a craft or specialist leather shop, or, if you’re a bit more thrifty and resourceful, upcycle some from some old, unwanted leather goods. The Berimbau consists of a wooden bow (verga – traditionally made from biribá wood), about 4 to 5 feet long with a steel string (arame – often pulled from the inside of an automobile tire) tightly strung and secured from one end of the verga to the other. A gourd (cabaça), dried, opened and hollowed-out, attached to the lower portion of the Verga by a loop of tough string, acts as a resonator. The Cavaquinho is similar to a guitar in its shape and the use of metal strings. The traditional Cavaco is made with 17 to 19 frets. However, these frets are small and difficult to play. For such reason, most beginners will only use the first 3 to 5 frets. Other sophisticated Cavaquinhos have longer fretboards. Mestre Bimba used a pointed foot on his berimbaus – this was the traditional form, from the days when the berimbau also served as a potential weapon! The point of the verga could be jabbed into your adversary with painful results! The beating and sound produced from the instrument would “control” the movement of those practicing capoeira by giving their unique, acrobatic movements a cadence to follow. Gunga — This instrument has the largest cabaça (gourd) and the most flexible verga, and it produces the lowest pitch.

Instrumento In general, the strongest/least flexible vergas are best for violas, intermediates for medios, and the most flexible for gungas, though one can never be guaranteed that a verga and cabaça are going to “marry”, and the only way to find a good paring is to try various combinations (for this reason, it’s good is you can organise making berimbaus with your group, so you’ve got lots of different vergas and cabaças to try with one another).
