Bruce Springsteen wrote BLOOD BROTHERS in early 1995 in celebration of the brief reunion of the E Street Band — he had disbanded the band in 1989. In the liner notes of his 1995 Greatest Hits album, Springsteen simply wrote, "It was good to see the guys." Blood Brothers Original West End Cast - 1983 West End". www.broadwayworld.com . This take is labeled "TAKE THREE, ONE LAST TRY" on the documentary and is actually the same take that was released on Greatest Hits. The cast remained substantially the same as that at Liverpool Playhouse with Kate Fitzgerald taking over the role of Linda and, later in the run, Robert McIntosh taking over as the Narrator.

year old Mrs Johnstone lives in the Victorian inner-city slums of Liverpool. She describes her whirlwind romance with her husband, who, once attracted to her because of how she looked "like Marilyn Monroe," lost interest in her after multiple pregnancies and weight gain, and eventually left her for a younger, more attractive woman. Now a single mother, she discovers she's pregnant yet again (" Marilyn Monroe"). A solo acoustic demo is partially shown in chapter 6 (on the DVD release) of the Blood Brothers documentary. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). A solo acoustic demo is partially shown in chapter 1 (on the DVD release) of the Blood Brothers documentary. See solo acoustic demo #1 for more details. The song was recorded in January 1995 at The Hit Factory in New York City, NY, with the E Street Band when Springsteen assembled the entire band, plus alumnae Steven Van Zandt, for about ten days of studio sessions. According to Brucebase, session player Frank Pagano played percussion instruments on this song. There are many different arrangements, and it's clear that Springsteen was uncertain about which to use, but two ended up being officially released. A solo acoustic demo is partially shown in chapter 12 (on the DVD release) of the Blood Brothers documentary. See solo acoustic demo #3 for more details.

The Blood Brothers 2023 UK Tour is coming to a theatre near you. The Blood Brothers the musical has now been playing theatres in the UK and Ireland since 1983. BLOOD BROTHERS 2023 UK TOUR I’d had the idea for Blood Brothers for some years before I had the courage to try and write it. It was one of those rare ideas that came almost fully formed, the story just dropping into my head. I was walking along one day, lifted my foot and by the time I’d put it down again I had the plot, narrative, the central characters, the superstition and the knowledge that it had to be a musical. Blood Brothers is the finest British musical of the past 20 years, Willy Russell's greatest masterpiece and a show which sees the audience openly weeping night after night in the theatre. A full-band take is partially shown in chapter 3 (on the DVD release) of the Blood Brothers documentary. This take is labeled "TAKE ONE" on the documentary. See full-band take #1 for more details. During the early 1970s, the Johnstone family are moved from the condemned inner-city slums of Liverpool to a new council house in the nearby overspill town of Skelmersdale ("Bright New Day").

Blood Brothers started life as a play touring UK schools written by Willy Russell. Russell later adapted the play with music he had written. Willy Russell’s other plays include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Take #18" is performed by Bruce Springsteen accompanied by Max Weinberg on drums and Roy Bittan on keyboards. It features some lyrical variations and can perhaps be described as "Secret Garden-ish".
