The aortic arches of the rat are among the most commonly studied in murine models due to marked anatomical homology to the human cardiovascular system. [21] Both rat and human aortic arches exhibit subsequent branching of the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery, as well as geometrically similar, nonplanar curvature in the aortic branches. [21] Aortic arches studied in rats exhibit abnormalities similar to those of humans, including altered pulmonary arteries and double or absent aortic arches. [22] Despite existing anatomical analogy in the inthrathoracic position of the heart itself, the murine model of the heart and its structures remains a valuable tool for studies of human cardiovascular conditions. [23] THE AUTHOR: After spending sixteen years as an ecologist, crawling through undergrowth and studying nocturnal habits of animals (and people), Dr Sarah Yarwood-Lovett naturally turned her mind to murder. She may have swapped badgers for bears when she emigrated from a quaint village in the South Downs to the wild mountains of the Pacific Northwest, but her books remain firmly rooted in the rolling downland she grew up in. What Is A Group Of Rats Called? [And The Reason Why]

Suspecting this isn't the tragic accident it appears DI James Clark calls upon Nell and her ecological skills to help find the murderer. But she soon finds that more lurks under the surface than she could ever have imagined. Despite the danger, Nell is determined to dredge up the truth from the murky depths of this case, before it's too late... But her efforts are somewhat thwarted by her growing mutual attraction to detective sergeant Clark and a flirtatious relationship with Dr. Adam Kashyap her colleague. That part is true. The rest is a mixture of history and myth, with a sprinkle of superstition thrown in for good measure. The symbiotic worlds of classic car racing and luxury auto dealing lend a bit of flair to the third Nell Ward mystery, but the characters fall flat. Again, the ecologists are instrumental to the solution. But there's a lot more interpersonal rivalry/confusion/disgruntlement than in the previous books. Which for me is somewhat extraneous. I love a nice well-rounded character, but there doesn't need to ALWAYS be conflict. Let the mystery be the main thing.Readers who are into “saving the newts” will enjoy this novel, but those of us who aren’t into hugging trees should probably skip this one. I've read each of the books in the series and I love how Nell's job as an ecologist is woven into the mysteries. Nell is such a likable character, but there are plenty of characters in the books that aren't, such as Nell's cousin Shannon and Nell's boyfriend's mother. Sometimes Nell's family and relationship dramas play too large of a part in the stories. This book ended with an abrupt cliffhanger that I didn't care for, but it did make me want to find out what will happen in Book 4. I rated this book 3.5 stars, but rounded up. This is the third in the series and I have yet to read the first two. But it worked fine as a stand-alone. Furthermore, while a pair of rats is a good start, if you can own 3 or more it will be much more beneficial to their health and wellbeing.
