Microcrystalline Wax is ideal for delicate artefacts due to its pH neutral and acid-free qualities. The wax stays clear and forms a hard layer when applied that, once buffed, gives a gentle sheen and will repel moisture on furniture. Its properties also help prevent oxidation of metal surfaces. Axminster Microcrystalline Waxes offer a versatile finish

You can apply the retro whitewash finish to plywood using water-based paint or solvent-based paints. Light pastel colors such as white, pale blue, and yellow make ideal colors for this technique. Staining plywood, particularly plywood with a good wood grain pattern, allows you to enrich the color of the final project. So remember these top tips when selecting one of our woodturning finishes for your project. Prep your work piece, use a sealer (unless using finishing oil), match your project to the protection levels you require, and consider what polished look you want to achieve; we guarantee that Axminster Tools has the woodturning finish for you.

Procedure

Paint the plywood. Apply your chosen paint type and color to the plywood. The method of paint application will depend on the desired finish. Efflorescence may also occur on aged surfaces if they again become wet, e.g. as a result of leaks or overflows. The fluffy type of efflorescence may disrupt paint coatings, particularly the relatively impermeable oil based types, if they are applied before the substrate has dried out and the growth has ceased. Emulsion paints may permit the salts to pass through the film with relatively little physical damage but they may affect its colour or appearance. Efflorescence should be removed with a dry, coarse cloth at intervals of 7 - 14 days and painting should be deferred until the growth ceases.

I've finished a solid body bubinga wood guitar with only Danish Oil which fills the grain and also dries quite hard so that any kind of top coat can be applied but it's not essential for the home player to have a top coat in my opinion. I've seen guitars with only a wax finish which look very nice.

When applying the seal coat with a brush, use even, overlapping strokes. Keep an eye on corners and edges; puddling tends to occur in these locations. The reason friction polish gives a high shine, is down to the high levels of carnauba wax it contains, which is also often found in French Polish. Try the popular Titebond’s Instant CA Glue - Thin for tough results. Titebond Instant Bond CA Thin Glue is great for a variety of projects, including craft projects and as a finish for small woodturning projects The ‘woodturner’s finish’ An alternative to a plain color finish can be painting on the guitar, gluing a printed image, cloth cover, and more. There are also many versatile sprays with glitter, metallic finish, and textures. The possibilities are endless. Applying Color to your guitar Using a Spray can Clean dust off the plywood. Vacuum the sanding dust off the plywood, or wipe it down with a damp cloth.
