The unsinkable Titanic had sunk. Belfast was in mourning. The Great War was eating up a generation of young men, leaving not just empty chairs in many homes but literally thousands of broken hearts all with a need for answers to inexplicable loss. Belfast, Crawford tell us was "hiding in its own madness".

Exploiting agile design principles, sophisticated digital applications, and advanced manufacturing skills, the team will generate knowledge and evidence for a potential follow-on project. Findings could lead to this revolutionary capability being deployed by the RAF to enhance protection, survivability and information advantage to aircrews. Spirit Belfast is delighted to lead the delivery of a national programme enabling the development of cutting-edge technologies while maintaining critical skills in the UK," said Scott McLarty, Senior Vice-President of Spirit AeroSystems, Airbus Programs. "Supporting the MOD's strategic objectives on pace, affordability and operational capacity, Team MOSQUITO will help drive collaborative innovation and competitive advantage. We are excited to develop this relationship with a view to contributing to a more sustainable industrial base for UK defence." There is a good idea for a book in The Spirit Engineer. Unfortunately, I found that precious little about it landed for me. As a child, Kathleen helped her family pay their way, blouse-cutting for the large factories which made up the city’s world-dominating textile industry. The women of Ulster were renowned for their skilled needlework, though the Goligher family were likely more involved in the less-skilled pattern-cutting trade, trimming linen into shapes to be stitched elsewhere. The remuneration was meagre, though poor families such as the Golighers were at least able to afford food and benefit from a grace and favour home supplied by their employers.

There is nothing in the book which would entice this reviewer to a seance. It's a grotesque abuse of the vulnerable and there are many vulnerable characters in this particular story. I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to read something outside of my usual genres. It was the perfect spooky read for October, but honestly, West may have triggered a hidden love of dark gothic stories in me. I’ve already added a bunch of new books to my TBR in the genre – I just hope that some of them are even half as gorgeous as The Spirit Engineer– it’s going to be a tough act to follow. Read The Spirit Engineer for yourself But as William dives deeper into this world of the unknown, he must tread carefully for it won’t just be the dead that he disturbs when someone he was convinced had left this world years ago, may yet still be alive… The pumpkin dragonling from Dirty Paws Australia felt right at home with this supernatural tale! Happiness Boost:

UNSURPRISINGLY, my favourite genre of books are usually to do with politics. If not politics, history, and if not that travel or sport.I was saying only yesterday how receiving proofs is one sure fire way of reading books I may never have come across. If I’m honest, ghosts- and spirits-type stories are not normally a genre I would levitate towards (see what I did there?!), but I can tell you that I am so PLEASED The Spirit Engineer found it’s way to me. To those in the mainstream, they were shysters and con merchants trading in the misery of the bereaved. It was around this time that Kathleen’s mother passed away, and one can only imagine the emotional pressure of the situation in which the young medium found herself. By d’Albe’s account, it seems clear that tensions were high between the Golighers and the respected – and clearly disappointed – investigator.

The author has documented his research and I would urge you to watch this along with the book, it’s fascinating to see the institute where William worked along with other pieces of evidence that appear in the book. Set in a historical moment where science and spiritualism meet, The Spirit Engineer is an ingeniously plotted debut novel’ Sarah Burton, author of The Strange Adventures of H I genuinely feel quite blessed that I found this story before other novelists did, because it gave me the confidence I needed to do the one thing in life that I absolutely had to achieve”. On top of that, the characterization is practically non-existent. The story reads merely as a sequence of events strung together by the presence of our main character. There is very little motivation to be had as West does not take the time to delve into the inner workings of Crawford's mind. The only thing that West actually makes clear about our protagonist is that he is a selfish and incredibly misogynistic man who does not care about anyone in his life. There is absolutely no reason for you to care about him and because none of the other characters are developed in any way, there is no one to anchor the reader in the story.

See why people love living in ayrshire

West notes that The Spirit Engineer is “a very soulful, deep book, but about a rip-roaring dramatic and twisted story.” The Spirit Engineer is available to buy now. Two years after the tragic and distressing sinking of the Titanic, high society is under the heady spell and grip of spiritualism and more people grow convinced that not only can they see their dearly departed loved ones, but they can communicate with them through the new and exciting séances which are proving to be all the rage! Is it possible Kathleen worked as a medium under duress from her family? If not duress, then might we look to the social pressures placed on children born into intense religious cultures. After all, if you live in a small world, without education, without prospects or outside perspectives, might you believe entirely in the paranormal, inured to the questionable morality of your actions? Or, did she find herself a prisoner of her own dupe, knowing she was dishonest and caring or not caring as her precocious morality allowed? We will never know, and I wrote The Spirit Engineer in such a way as to preserve Kathleen Goligher’s mystery. Still, we’re not without some detail. Professor William Crawford is a rational man. An engineer, he teaches at the local institute in Belfast, only just keeping his family financially afloat, and he awaits the success of his next book, to release them from the goodwill of the not very likeable Aunt Adelia, who dangles the financial carrot in front of the family she likes to keep as a pet project. fast-pace environment, construction projects have moved more rapidly than ever, and the solution to one problem is often the determinant for the next step. For that reason, we place a priority on

The Spirit Engineer by A. J. West brilliantly twines the gothic & historical fiction genres together… Become part of a thriving community of successful crime writers with invaluable support, expertise and marketing opportunities for all our members. A reoccuring message throughout the book is Death is a beginning, and so we start the book of with William’s suicide. So we know the story isn’t going to end well… But it doesn’t spoil anything. Although we do get an inkling throughout the book as to the why, we are never certain of it till about 90% into the book. And it is still unclear as to why the real William killed himself (Arthur Conan Doyle actually speculates that it was his final big experiment regarding the realness of spiritualism).

However, it all starts to unravel, leaving the reader not knowing what is real and what is not, those who believe, and those who only believe they believe, until the final part, in which (no spoilers) everything is explained, to great effect. energy management solutions and government energy rebate programs, and are skilled in energy consulting, green building design, and energy audits. Gripping from the outset – A.J West immerses readers in the spiritualism of 1914 Belfast with great skill. A wonderful debut' Sam Hurcom, author of Letters from the Dead Absolutely brilliant! This is *the* book for Halloween. It’s an immersive, fascinating and truly creepy read. I was so sold on the cover that I didn’t even bother reading the synopsis and had no idea what to expect, let alone that it’s based on real events.
