Description

Barefoot Books has created an animated version of each book in this series (they come on the CD, but are also online and linked below). Your child can watch these first if that kind of conditioning helps your kids to be more interested in the books (as it does mine). Astronautical Waltz focuses on the human experience of being an astronaut - training, exercise, space helmets and spacesuits, working in 'micro-gravity'. Apollo Journey follows the familiar story of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission from launch sequence, through lift-off, stepping on the moon, experiments on the lunar surface, ending with the return to Earth and splashdown. The book is an adaptation of "The Green Grass Grows All Around," the traditional cumulative song. Cumulative songs are great for autistic kids, they add an element with each verse, combining repetition and predictable structure. These songs encourage pupils to discover aspects of space exploration and to think about our place in the universe - especially our solar system. They are fun songs to join in, several with sing-along choruses, some with a sense of dramatic adventure, and others in a mood of relaxed cool-ness, in a range of popular styles.

Barefoot Books is a pretty remarkable children's press for many reasons related to sustainability and manufacturing standards. They also have a firm commitment to inclusive books that showcase human diversity (including visible forms of disability). The Barefoot Singalong series is particularly special. Lumps and Bumps briefly describes a few physical characteristics of the moon and the planets within the solar system, to which you can dance a lively waltz!
