Sand slime is my absolute favorite slime and I always join the kids when they’re playing with it. In fact, I will sometimes grab some sand slime by myself when I feel like I need relaxation or something to keep my hands busy. There’s something so soothing about the texture. I like it even better than silly putty! SAND SLIME VS KINETIC SAND We started off by sifting the sand. Sand contains glass and little pebbles, which is fine, but I wasn’t looking for a chunky textured slime. I wanted to remove anything that would compromise a super soft, stretchy slime consistency. How to make sand slime You can keep your kinetic sand in a ziploc bag or a plastic container with a lid on which will stop dust getting on it. After stirring, we added about 1/2 cup of the sifted sand. I did it in smaller increments, stirring in between. I wanted to make sure that the sand was mixed in completely. I didn’t want my daughter to play with the slime and then have residual sand on her hands. (Not that it would have hurt anything, just not what I was going for).My daughter stirred while I added the sand and we made sure it was mixed in completely before moving on. Grab some liquid starch and PVA glue and get started!

Test in an inconspicuous area: Before applying the cleaning solution to the stained area, test it in a small, inconspicuous spot on the carpet to ensure it doesn’t cause any discoloration or damage. We call it a Non-Newtonian fluid because it’s a little bit of both! Experiment with making the slime more or less viscous with varying amounts of foam beads. Can you change the density? Did you know that slime aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)? While saline solution alone may not provide the required slime activation properties, it can still be used in slime-making recipes in combination with other slime activators. For example, saline solution can be mixed with baking soda or liquid starch, which are alternative slime activators, to achieve the desired slime consistency. Is Slime messy?

Playing with kinetic sand is a fantastic sensory activity for young kids. They can mold it into shapes and objects, hide things in it or just simply play with it in their hands which also helps to develop their fine motor skills. When we mix glue with something called an activator, like borax, sodium borate or baking soda mixed with water, it causes a reaction. This reaction connects the chains of polymers, kind of like holding hands, and turns the liquid glue into a solid and stretchy slime. You now need to take the mixture with your hands, fold more sand in with it until it becomes less gooey and is able to form into shapes. Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms, the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti! Read more the science of slime. Is slime a liquid or solid? Kinetic sand is much less messy than a bin of plain sand, but you can still expect some spills when your kids’ imaginations take off!It seemed like all the stretchy kinetic sand recipes required Sta-Flo and as I’m in the UK, I was not able to get this ingredient easily. So what’s the secret to making kinetic sand that’s stretchy?

Your kinetic sand should feel a little moist and be able to mold into shapes easily. If you pull it, it will stretch but won’t be as stretchy as slime.
