Requires FUJIFILM X Acquire and Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO/ Tether Shooting Plug-in (Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 6 or CC is required). This 80/2.8 has a lot of breathing; the image becomes much larger as focused more closely even if nothing moves. It was not until late 2017 that Fuji finally met the demands of the macro-cohort and released the much anticipated XF 80mm f/2.8 Macro. Weather-resistant lens with excellent Optical Image Stabilization and a highly accurate Floating Focus System. Fuji claims a 5 stop advantage for their OIS system and tests indicate that this is realistic. Razor sharp images could be achieved at ridiculously low shutter speeds. However, for precise framing and some static subjects, switching the OIS off and using a tripod is still a useful technique. It is also true that OIS will do nothing for subject movement, such as wildlife.

No, the bokeh of the XF80mm is not as well controlled as on the XF90mm in the corners. You will have some cat eye / swirly effects wide open, but the bokeh is much smoother with the XF80mm than with the 90mm. X-T2 – XF80mm f/2.8 Latest development of the X Mount Lens Roadmap unveiled; new Firmware Updates for FUJIFILM X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F and X-T20 coming soonI don’t know why it matters, but the Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 is one of the best looking lenses I’ve come across – so let’s start there. By f/16, both lenses produce visibly softer results due to diffraction but the 80mm does seem to retain a small lead over the 90mm. f/22 is so soft on the 80mm that I don’t really consider it useable. The Fujifilm XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro is the latest weatherproof XF lens to be released, featuring a dust-proof and waterproof structure with weather resistant sealing applied via 11 special seals on the lens barrel, making it a perfect partner for the weatherproof X-T2 camera. However, macro photography is a niche field and not many people decide to fully explore it. It is a specialized area of photography that involves a lot of experimentation and patience, and it also requires a good environment. Despite the X-mount being around since 2011, there are only three Fujifilm macro lenses available as of writing this article. This includes the brand new Fujifilm XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM W Macro which was just released in January 2023.

The new XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR is a lightweight, mid-telephoto macro lens designed to deliver the very best results from Fujifilm’s unique X-Trans CMOS sensor. Capable of achieving high quality macro shots, the XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR features an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super ED lens and three ED lenses. As the first in the X Series interchangeable lens series to have a 1.0x magnification factor, the XF80mmF2.8 achieves high resolving power and beautiful bokeh, making it a perfect lens for capturing stunning macro images. There are no color fringes as shot Fujifilm's cameras, which by default correct for any that may be there. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same very high magnification would be about 21 × 31" (1.7 × 2.6 feet or 50 × 80 cm). The linear motor is great for the larger type lenses, and as you can probably guess just by looking at all the crazy stuff included in this lens, it’s not exactly the smallest lens in the Fujifilm line up. Size and build

Optical stabilisation

With these considerations in mind, it’s time to take a look at how Fujifilm’s latest macro prime, the XF 80mm f/2.8, stands up against one of its best telephoto portrait offerings, the XF 90mm f/2, with a specific focus on their characteristics for portrait work. The big attraction of the lens we’re looking at here is its minimum focus distance (25cm) and full-scale 1:1 reproduction ratio. These enable a subject or object to be photographed at the size it would appear if it were to be overlaid on the imaging sensor.

This is a 1:1 macro lens. 1:1 macro means that the image at the sensor is the same size as the subject, which means that something 0.6 x 1" (16 x 24mm) can fill the frame. f/2.8 Sorry John I confused this with a 120 (another review I’ve read very recently) so this is more like a 150 on 35mm equivalent terms. This 80mm is a great macro lens, but unless you really are shooting macro the Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 is better made with much more metal, smaller, lighter, a full stop faster and costs less. They get similar resolution figures centre of the lens, but Fuji is much more planar, nothwithstanding the fact Fuji is working on a 24MP APS-C sensor and Sony is working on a 42MP FF sensor. The only real difference in the focus rings is that the 80mm’s is rubberised while the 90mm’s is metallic. Personally I prefer the rubber version as it is grippier and isn’t as cold to the touch. Magnification ratio: also known as the magnification/reproduction ratio, this is the ratio of the actual size of a subject to the size projected onto your camera sensor. A macro lens can be considered as soon as the ratio of 1:1 is reached. There are other lenses (such as the Laowa) that offer larger ratios (2:1 to 5:1), Two extra features found on the barrel of the 80mm are the focus limiter switch and an on/off switch for optical stabilisation. The former lets you choose between three focus ranges: Full, 50cm to infinity, and 25cm to 50cm. As for focusing speed, it’s fairly swift, but with such a large focus distance range to cover it isn’t the fastest focusing prime lens in the Fujinon range. I also noticed it had a tendency to momentarily hunt for focus when asked to acquire focus from near to far and vice versa. Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro – Image quality
