The characters include a mature girl named Olive, her older sister Sukie who has a strange pen pal, her younger brother Cliff and her widowed mother. I think we can learn a lot from this friendship as it shows us that prejudice and discrimination can be overcome by empathy and mutual understanding. In the midst of World War Two, a bombing in London becomes the explosive catalyst that sees two sisters separated. Letters From The Lighthouse is a middle-grade historical fiction novel that I really enjoyed reading! From Nobel Laureates Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter to theatre greats Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett to rising stars Polly Stenham and Florian Zeller, Faber Drama presents the very best theatre has to offer.

And then she finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous. We meet three siblings during an air raid in London and follow Olive and her brother Cliff on the hunt for the truth to their sister going missing.

My favourite part was when granny joss discovers a planet and then professor smocks(a mean scientist) says he found it. Emma Carroll has a wonderful takent for bringing historic events to life for today’s young readers and with Letters from the Lighthouse continues to create an enthralling, thrilling read, whilst introducing situations and characters that are still relevant in our world today. I did read it really quickly There is secrecy, mystery, adventure and real danger within the story which is narrated by the main character, a twelve years old girl.

I really liked Letters From The Lighthouse because it was a sad story but in a way happy because in the the end they have a happy and enthusiastic life.

This is an absolutely gripping historical mystery set during the Second World War, and one which I read in one sitting as I just couldn’t put it down! There, Olive has to solve a mystery of her own: a strange coded letter holding very important information which seems to link her sister (Sukie) with Devon and to something important and impossibly dangerous. The main protagonists are Olive and Cliff, a brother and sister evacuated from London to a small fishing village in Devon during World War II.At first Olive struggles with life in the country and sadly makes an enemy of the challenging Esther. The historical information I have learnt from this book is that Jews were not given permission to evacuate to any country. Along with her younger brother, Cliff, Olive is evacuated to the Devonshire town of Budmouth Point with no answer as to what happened to her older sister. The impact of the evacuees on the seaside village of Budmouth Point is described wonderfully, the plight of children from the Kindertransport is told sensitively and different situations help readers to see events from different viewpoints. Olive and her brother Cliff are evacuated to the Devon coast after it becomes unsafe for them to remain in London as the air raids are becoming more and more frequent.

In this book, there were not a lot of illustrations but the ones there were, were thorough and detailed to help visualise the story. At first, Olive is unsure about Esther as she is different to the other children and comes across as cold and uninviting.I was a bit slow off the mark in reading Letters from the Lighthouse so there was a lot of discussion online already however I had heard only positive things about it. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. The reader is treated responsibly; we understand that ‘there is a war on’, that other events and activities take precedence.
