World-building - There wasn't much to begin with. It's not exactly a radical idea. Secret society, keeping magic from the world for their and its own good. The Harry Potter influence is actually quite heavy, there are scenes which literally feel like a retelling. It's not completely off-putting though. Some of it I even enjoyed. Was suprised that the next series wasn't going to focus on Saskia and Jacob. When I saw the two year time-skip at the begginning of the last chapter I don't know why I immediately thought of them.Harley's magical powers include Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Telekinesis, Empathy (she can read people's emotions), Reverse Empathy (she can make others feel whatever emotion she wants them to feel), Bestial abilities (she can control Purge beasts), and she can read unfinished Grimoires. Having all four elements is very rare and makes Harley very powerful. Her Primus Anglicus blood makes her even more powerful than an Atlantean, and very important for the balance of Chaos. Several other reviewers, as well as the book’s description, have compared Harley Merlin to Harry Potter, and the comparisons are apt—a magical society/school that humans are unaware of; bureaucratic elements; forces of evil; an orphaned main character with an opaque family history.

Its not your typical YA the heroine is Mature (for the most part) brilliantly written and doesn't fall in love at the first set of Green eyes. but introducing many characters all at once was another Negative point. I forget their names until they came into more focus.The author starts this book with a small synopsis of what transpired in the first book, making it easy for those who didn’t read it to understand whatever is happening. All the characters in the first book are more fleshed out, especially Tatyana, who remained a bit of a mystery in the first book. Finishing off a series that's been going for so many editions is not simple, but this brought both Harley and Finch's main adventures to a very satisfying conclusion. It felt like a natural end for their tales as protagonists. It brought a very hearty, yet thorough conclusion to a story that could have had a loooot of loose ends. All she knows for sure is that magical kids are missing, and they somehow fit into Katherine Shipton’s grand scheme. Now that Harley is an official member of the San Diego Coven, she feels more responsible than ever for its protection—and that of the magical world.
