Foreman – In this version players start the game with 2 random instruction cards. Over the course of the game, they can use one of these cards if they do not want to carry out an instruction shown on a drawn card. This version also states players have to place workers on the highest girder of the chosen colour. Whether you like dexterity games or not, Men at Work is a lot of fun, even after players have been eliminated, as that structure is going to come crashing down at some point, it’s just a question of who will do it! Allowing anyone who’s interested in playing to start without a lengthy rules explanation or a 17-minute introduction to modern board games.

Components are great and support the theme well. Plus dungeons & dragons and aquariums, and all. Men at work was designed by rita modi and illustrated by chris quilliams and bernard bittler. In most games, I’m not a fan of player elimination, as I often feel like there’s a better solution than having someone sit out and watch. Thankfully, it’s not really an issue in Men at Work, for two reasons. First off, since the game is just so entertaining to watch, even after being eliminated you can still get some enjoyment out of watching other players cause accidents or succeed in their ambitious plays. Secondly, and most importantly, the game is so short that even when someone gets eliminated relatively early, they only tend to have to watch for 5-10 minutes before the game ends. Higher and higher, the construction grows. Before long, the steel girders reach dizzying heights. Fearlessly, the workers carry on, with nothing more than hardhats to protect them. The danger of collapse hangs over everything so just make sure that nothing happens! You also have to impress Rita, the boss, if you want to be Employee of the Month. There’s a lot to do, so let’s get going! To make things even crazier you can combine all 3 of these variants if you want a much more chaotic experience.Dexterity games are often dismissed as being activities more than they are games, but Men at Work proves that notion doesn’t always apply. You’d think that this leniency benefits all players equally. However, it benefits more experienced and better players than anyone else. As often they’re able to stretch out each strike, decreasing the chance they’ll be eliminated before the shaky-hand players. When placing items in Men at Work, you must do so with one hand. You can test where you want to place it first before committing but if you cause anything to fall it counts as an accident. If nothing falls, then you can try your placement multiple times until you’re happy.

If a player loses all their safety certificates they are out of the game. I guess there are only so many accidents you can cause before you’re finally fired. Variants Players who reach the required number of awards will be declared the winner. This number is dependent on the number of players: The traditional way to win is if a player collects the required number of worker of the month awards. Higher and higher, the construction grows. The danger of collapse hangs over everything — so just make sure that nothing happens! You also have to impress Rita, the boss, if you want to be Employee of the Month. There's a lot to do, so let's get going! The precarious nature of the game is also one of its minor shortcomings, as the gentlest nudge of the table could send everything toppling. You need a flat, steady surface that can withstand a bit of bumping. I found the best way to play is around a coffee table. There’s a bit more of a performance element to being the only person to stand up and move around the table as you find the perfect place to slot in your piece, but it just amplifies the stakes and adds to the stability and integrity of the game. As the game goes on it gets tougher to place building materials and workers as the structure gets taller. At some point, the Rita Boss card will be drawn. Once this card is in play, players can start receiving worker of the month awards. If a player earns enough of these, they will win the game.

I love dexterity games and I’m always up for playing one. I think the reason being is I feel like I have my own fate in my hands, and that I have a sense of control. My sense of control usually fades when things don’t go as planned, but when it does, it does feel rewarding. In either case, I usually have lots of fun with them, even if I don’t win which happens more times than not. That concept works so well, thanks in large part to the theme, highlighted by the game’s magnificent table presence. Even if dexterity games aren’t your jam, anyone who sees this being played would be tempted to stop and watch. It’s not just that it looks nice; the components are heavy, durable, and satisfying to maneuver.

Men at Work is a brilliant fun dexterity game with great wooden components that fit perfectly their designated trays within the box. This is a 2-5 player game that works well at all player counts. It’s fun for whoever plays, whether that be children and family, new, or regular gamers. Having this alternative victory condition is awesome because it creates both positive and negative moments of tension. Someone might need one more award to win the game, or they might be one safety violation away from exiting early. In contrast to this, Men at Work spreads out on the tabletop like a bottle of jam. Allowing for more creativity in where you place your items. Especially when combined with the challenges you’re provided with each turn. You’ll always have multiple choices on where to place your piece, making it a compelling decision without being overly complicated.
