Description

Do choose an appropriately sized pot. Use a clean pot that is one or two sizes larger than the original. Do not be tempted to over-pot. In other words, don’t move the plant into a pot that is significantly larger than the one it already is in. This is because over-potted plants are at risk of root-rot due to excess moisture retention by the extra volume of compost. Do use a suitable, fresh potting compost. As already discussed, use fresh houseplant compost when you are repotting. General houseplant repotting compost is appropriate for most houseplants.

You can also give potted plants a mini-refresh by simply removing the top layer of compost and replacing it. Should I repot with compost or soil?Plants with aerial roots such as Monstera, moth orchids and Anthurium need special attention. These special roots appear above the surface of the soil and should not be cut off nor buried in the soil when repotting.

For ultimate performance and especially for plants under stress you can also use Root Ultra, a root promotor for all plants specifically formulated for use in pots and containers. Soil Depth: When repotting allow a little room for the roots to spread. The soil should not be so shallow that without drainage the roots will sit in water, nor so deep that the water drains below the roots leaving the plant to dry out. Garden compost is the homemade compost you find in a compost bin. It’s made from rotted-down plant, vegetable and fruit waste, and can also include things like grass cuttings and cardboard. Garden compost is great for improving the structure of soil and adding nutrients, but it’s not the same as potting compost. As well as plenty of controlled release nutrients, this compost has a water retaining agent to keep hanging baskets happy. * SylvaGrow peat free potting compost Seedlings thrive in light compost that allows their small stems to push through easily. When you buy a bag of compost, it’s essentially organic matter which is designed to improve soil, or support plants grown in specific conditions – such as containers. Hydroculture plants are measured the same way as soil plants, however the grow pots are sized by diameter plus their standardised heights, which allows a water meter to be fitted. For example: an 18/19 grow pot has an 18cm diameter at the rim and is 19cm tall.
