Lee lost track of the number of trips he took across the rural South, but he remembers burning through three cars. In 1983, Baldwin Lee (born 1951) left his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, with his 4 5 view camera and set out on the first of a series of road trips to photograph the American South. For seven years in the 1980s, Chinese-American New York photographer Baldwin Lee cut an eccentric figure around the Southern states of the USA.This volume presents the first critical look at Tress’s early career, contextualizing the highly imaginative, fantastic work he became known for while also examining his other interrelated series: Appalachia: People and Places; Open Space in the Inner City; Shadow; and Theater of the Mind. However, those outside of that classification or who lived “south of the tracks,” well, life was more like Lee showed in his photos. White strolled into lectures barefoot and encouraged his often bemused technology students to heighten their awareness of the creative process by practising meditation and reading Zen Buddhist texts. These nuts-and-bolts revelations are a real treat for photographers, especially portraitists, and one of several components which make Baldwin Lee a special book. With a handful of rare exceptions, those who contributed in a creative discipline did so during a five-to-seven-year period.
