Description

I found that for a book that was supposed to be positive about all types of birth it was very negative about the kind I am likely to have. I love this book. Everyone’s going to love this book. Because it gives mothers what they now most need – accurate facts, proper reassurance, and about a thousand reasons to be excited about birth.”

The whole gist of both the class and this book is the idea that we, as pregnant women, have the power to give birth to our babies and to have a birthing experience that can be positive regardless of the decisions we make or the unexpected variables that may be encountered. Home birth or hospital birth, epidural or pain relief free, vaginal or cesarean, riddled with complications or completely smooth sailing... Whatever ends up happening, childbirth is a better experience the more informed you are ahead of time about your choices, so that no matter what happens, you can advocate for yourself and your baby. A phenomenal book for everyone who wants or needs to know about periods (which is pretty much all of us!). Bravo Milli” There were a couple of other ideas that I thought were absent. I can't think of them off the top of my head and hope to add them here next time I read this book. With guidance on choosing period products, charting your cycles and preparing a first period kit, alongside profiles of ‘cycle superstars’ such as Amika George who are working to end period poverty, this book is the complete guide to getting your period. The icons represent every possible birth choice in every setting, from home birth to caesarean. There are some blank cards included too, because every birth is unique. You’ll also find a guide inside with suggestions to get you started. Milli Hill is a writer, feminist and freelance journalist with a passion for reframing the narrative around women’s bodies. As well as The Positive Birth Book, she is also the author of Give Birth like a Feminist and My Period (for preteen girls). From 2012 to 2021 she founded and ran the Positive Birth Movement, a global network of antenatal discussion groups aimed at improving birth and giving women better access to support and information. New section on your rights in pregnancy and birth by Bashi Hazard of the Human Rights in Childbirth International Lawyers Network

I think the book would have benefited from a section on improving on one's previous birth experiences. Yes, the idea of PTSD and healing from traumatic birth was covered, but more as an "if this happens to you, you will be prepared" sort of way. An explicit reference to this sort of birth baggage and further resources for healing for someone who has already had this sort of birth before being exposed to the idea of birth positivity and The Positive Birth Movement would have been, in my opinion, incredibly helpful and appropriate here. The Positive Birth Book has empowered hundreds of thousands of women worldwide to make informed, positive choices about their births. The section on caesarean was very negative and assumed that you would feel like a failure. The only reason anyone feels like a failure after having a caesarean is because of attitudes like this book. Lots of people choose to have an elective caesarean. I finished this book in 3 days and it definitely gets the thumbs up from me. It’s like you’re learning but you don’t feel like you’re learning”. So find your flow, bust some myths and start to feel proud of your monthly cycle and your truly amazing body!

What you need to know about exercise in pregnancy from Charlie Launder, author of Bumps and Burpees Milli Hill is a bestselling non-fiction author, freelance journalist, feminist, creative psychotherapist, mum of three, and author of the popular blog The Mule. A timely and necessary book to bring periods out of the shadows and much needed period eduction into the spotlight” Whether you plan to have your baby in hospital, in a birth centre, at home or by elective caesarean, this essential, non-judgemental guide shows you how to raise your expectations and have the best possible birth experience. The Positive Birth Book is a must-read for every mum-to-be. By showing that birth can be an amazing, empowering and life-enhancing experience, Milli Hill is giving birth to a whole new way to think about bringing life into the world.”Since I read this book I have been really excited to get my period! In fact, every time I go to the toilet I hope it’s there!” A rallying cry for women everywhere…everyone should read this book and look at childbirth through a feminist lens.” The Positive Birth Book is like everything I ever Googled pre-birth rolled into a friendly, warm format and is full-to-burtsing with USEFUL information. For example, I am rhesus negative and to be honest I never really understood what that meant, I just did what I was told! This book explains it so well. It is also refreshing to read something positive about all types of birth – I didn’t feel like I was being preached to. I wish I had read this book during my pregnancies!” Milli is a compassionate and passionate writer who puts women squarely at the heart of her endeavours’

My Period is perfectly written for girls going through puberty, in a language that they will understand. A no nonsense, essential guide for young girls that explains EVERYTHING they need to know. Highly recommended!”

Birth is THE feminist issue of our century and feminists have dropped the ball.”
