Here are some reasons to do it more, some stories about people who have been successful and some ways to prompt yourself to question more. If you place too much importance on being right, it can put you in “defence” mode and close off learning and understanding. I do not disagree with this point, although the book at times felt a bit long, reiterating the same point without adding anything new. In this deeply thought-provoking book, Warren Berger shows how learning the art of good questioning—and resisting the urge to race too quickly toward conclusions—is the path to a far more fruitful and creative way of engaging with the world, at work and in life as a whole.

Whether you are engaged in business, raising a family, falling in love or trying to be have more fun at cocktail parties, fortifying yourself with a massive repository of great questions to ask, and genuine curiosity about what you hear will add to your success. Sidebars summarize certain key questions in each section, and more questions are italicized in the exposition throughout the book.Fascinating, engaging stories give life to a strong argument about how much can be accomplished, in every domain of our lives, ‘just’ by asking questions. His writing appears regularly in Psychology Today, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and The New York Times. Given that most of these books appear to be nugget of a good idea + lots of padding + bit of self-help this section turned out to be surprisingly useful.

The balance is to be humble enough to admit you don’t have all the answers — while being confident that you can help the organisation to figure them out. p10 we can easily fall into the “trap of expertise,” wherein knowledgeable people begin to rely too much on what they already know and fail to keep expanding upon and updating that knowledge. To find a “problem” that’s worth devoting your creative efforts to solve, start with a high interest level — meaning it touches on something that matters to you. Whereas the previous question may focus on existing problems or inadequacies, this one focuses on the absence of something — a product that doesn’t exist but should, a need not addressed, a perspective that is underrepresented. Note: I would recommend picking up Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It separately, Berger cites the FBI several times in this book, but he doesn't present the whole framework they use.Funny I just never realize how the mechanics (and choice of words) of asking a question affects the people and their emotions when we use the incorrect option. The thing with this section is that most of the books he summarises are genuinely good and worth reading in their own right, and the way they are presented here is doing them a disservice. Parts I-IV drills deep into the topics of: decision making, creativity, personal connection with others, and finally leadership. Just thinking about how you would pick up the pieces if you did fail tends to lessen the fear of that possibility. Una volta tanto, io non sono io, non sono da nessuna parte, non esisto e mi metto in un mio particolare “dove” di osservazione per rompere gli attributi agli altri.

Imagine that the existing options you’re deciding between suddenly have vanished; this forces you to try to come up with additional possibilities. A fascinating look at the power of questioning to ignite change--in our companies, schools, careers, and in our daily lives. Here he cites several works, including Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All and many others.Ma il libro delle variabili-costanti deve pur avere un senso, altrimenti chi lo leggerà, e se leggere significa capire, ci sarà pure qualcuno che vorrà capire, trovando delle risposte. When I heard Berger speak I thought he could provide something that develops my skill in this regard.

All of us can benefit by grappling with ambitious questions that encourage us to step back and consider possible ways to reimagine our lives or reinvent our careers. But the most amazing result of all was the fact that they couldn’t wait to get the next question out of the jar!Drawn from the insights and expertise of psychologists, innovators, effective leaders, and some of the world’s foremost creative thinkers, he presents the essential questions readers need to make the best choices when it truly counts, with a particular focus in four key areas: decision-making, creativity, leadership, and relationships. I understand that asking questions is a good practice, but for someone who isn’t naturally inclined to do this, how do we train ourselves to get better at this?
