Description

This is a rich and flavorful sipping whiskey, yet it’s so smooth. The first experience of the whiskey is sweet, with brown sugar and cherries — much like the scent. There are times when the taste is soggy, like chocolate doused in skim milk or cereal milk infused with cocoa pebbles. It’s hard not to constantly compare Double Oaked to standard Woodford Reserve as they both share the same mashbill and initial origins. Throughout this review I kept having to remind myself that while they may have started the same, they ended very differently. It’s really interesting to see the difference that exposure to another new virgin barrel that’s toasted and charred differently than the first barrel used in it’s aging can do to a bourbon. But the overall combination of flavors from the nose to the finish is well-balanced. Our Thoughts First Sip

The second third starts with some honeycomb and then I get a bit of vanilla. After the second third, it’s now rather creamy and actually smooth, with powdered chocolate cake-like tasting notes . Finish The nose has mixed aromas of sweet caramel, cherry, and oak notes. As it develops, the toasted marshmallows and subtly toasted oak appear. Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is a massive leap from the standard Woodford Reserve bourbon due to the flavors from the lightly charred oak tanks used to age this whiskey. However, since it’s a limited release, and you can’t find a bottle (just in case), mind you – only a handful of double-barreled expressions exist. Overall this is a great whiskey that is well balanced with the savory earthy notes pairing very nicely with the sweet candy flavors that naturally come in a bourbon. My one qualm with the Distiller’s Select is that the sweet hangs a little heavy, but the double oaking definitely rights that in the case of the Woodford Reserve. While it does sit at 1.5x the price of it’s single oaked brother I feel like it’s completely worth the extra money, even though it’s not my go-to at this price range, as it’s a deeper and richer bourbon that I could sip on all night long.Have you tried the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked? If so leave your own thoughts or tasting notes in the comments below. Woodford Reserve Double Wood Review Caramel, vanilla and oak. It has such a great classic bourbon nose that I just want to sit and sniff it for hours. Coming up behind the big three are hints of orange, butterscotch, mint, sweet tobacco and a slightly astringent pine. Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is a double-aged whiskey aged in charred oak barrels for the second time, giving it a deeper flavor and more complex character.

This is the perfect winter bourbon with tasting notes of burnt marshmallows, cranberry and bittersweet chocolate.” — Chris Morris, Master Distiller — Chris Morris, Master Distiller The same notes carry into the palate along with some nice honeycomb and buttery caramel, lightly charred oak (surprising for 43% ABV), and a few fresh grains in the finish. The taste lingers on your palate like the bold mark of a true Southern gentleman. Rebarreling isn’t new to the world of whiskey. But the Brown-Forman releasing the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked [ 1], which used new charred oak tanks for double-barrelling instead of a used bourbon barrel, is unique. The extra year in the barrel, Morris said, creates a bourbon that is distinctly spicier than its original counterpart, which is known for its sweeter taste and finish. If you’re a serious whiskey or bourbon enthusiast or an experienced one, you will find this Woodford bottle needs more complexity as it feels light despite being double-barreled.
