About this deal

My Many Colored Days intends to teach early elementary children that it is normal to experience different emotions on different days and even on the same day, which sometimes makes it hard to understand and express yourself.

Having read it a few times, my 6yo will pick this up at random times to help show us the colour of her mood. I have personally found this works especially well with children on the autistic spectrum and very young (pre-verbal) children. It does not pass judgement on feelings or describe them as positive or negative, it simply gives an idea of what effect thay have using very simple text and powerful images.

Brown days are like slow bears, gray days are like still owls, and purple days are like dragging dinosaurs. In 1993, a study was conducted on children’s emotional associations with colors and found that they had an early affinity with bright colors, having positive emotional connotations, and adversity with dark colors, having negative emotional connotations. Seuss, Thedor Geisel also used the pen name Theo LeSieg (Geisel backwards) for books written by him, but illustrated by others. This made for a great talking point about feelings and how they can come and go but not define our personality with my nursery drama class.Adults continue to be complicit with societal labels around color ranging from religious conceptions of black as evil and white as pure, to gendered labels such as blue representing boys and pink representing girls, and then they pass those ideas onto children. We have had the odd conversation after reading it that reflects the colour of the day that we have had - or how we felt in colours when we fell out or did something fun. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association listed the book in its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". My son does not tend to choose this at book reading time when it is next to so many more exciting looking books, for this reason. My Many Colored Days, published in 1996, reflects conversations within child psychology at the time. Seuss's youngest concept book is now available in a sturdy board book designed especially for his youngest fans. I'm reading it with my 3year old and the no pressure no drama style means some days she wants to talk about feelings in the book and other days she'd rather just list the animals illustrated inside - and that's perfect for us as it provokes thought and discussion rather then force feeding information.A brighter, more playful cover design makes this board book edition all the more appropriate as a color concept book to use with babies or a feelings and moods book to discuss with toddlers. This is a book good for starting conversations about feelings rather then directing or teaching about them directly. Seuss’s long list of awards includes Caldecott Honors, the Pulitzer Prize, and eight honorary doctorates. A rhyming story, it describes each day in terms of a particular color which is in turn associated with a specific emotion.

That said, when we read it, my son is happy to discuss how he has been feeling and it prompts conversation about what he has done that day (when getting this info is like getting blood out of a stone usually)! Bought for my gradaughter who’s 6 and had some medical treatment that was very difficult for her and I wanted a book about our feelings . Seuss’s first children’s book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, hit the market in 1937, and the world of children’s literature was changed forever! Yellow and pink days are happy like buzzing bees and jumping flamingos, directly in contrast to black days like mad and loud wolves, howling and growling at every cloud.

Dark colors represent emotions ranging from anger to sadness, while light colors represent emotions like happiness. I want to acknowledge that this analysis is based on stereotypical western cultural understandings of colors and that international associations with colors vary. This can foster negative self-concept for Black and Brown children and teach misleading information about various identities and diversity. In 1957, Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House’s best-selling series, Beginner Books. All of the original stunning illustrations and imaginative type designs of Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher are here, as are the intriguing die-cut squares in the cover.
