All in all though I loved this book a whole lot, and I hope that Chris Riddell will make many more. I would highly recommend this one.

This being a children's story, Ottoline meets helpful allies at every turn. She rides in a submarine. On a sea plane. On a raft called the Kon-Leekki, captained by Thør Thørrensen. Along the way, Ottoline's adventure includes hunting for mermaids (which turn out to manatees), meeting the Polar Bear Shoe Company, and visiting with Ringo and George (two green-nosed trolls who live in Norwegian Wood). There is nothing in this book to frighten young children, the Quite Big Foot turns out to be friendly and mischaracterized. On the Urban Safari, the Purple Fox shows Ottoline that the city is populated at night with flamingos, meerkats, miniature zebras and shy gorillas. I think Riddell included all of these animals simply because it would be fun to draw them. He lives in the basement which he says is much cosier than his cave. He is taking a holiday instead of hibernating. The Bear's secret is kept by Ottoline, and he keeps quiet about Ottoline eavesdropping on other people. He dresses up as Lady Ursula Jansen-Smith, to try and buy "Bimby" (Mr Munroe) from the Yellow Cat. He appears at the end, hugging the Yellow Cat to try and stop her from escaping. It is hinted in Ottoline's parent's letter that the Bear lives with Ottoline and Mr Munroe after being found. The Bear is not like a stereotypical bear, and he is actually quite nice. He lived in the laundry room and stole clothes from other people.
