Description

This is an interesting release. From the barrage of casks, it appears as this is Jura’s version of an expression from their stablemate distillery, Dalmore’s King Alexander III. But I’ll need to taste the rest of the revamped line to see if this proves to be true. A bit closed at first even after a good moment in the glass, but I’m getting fresh laundry, hay, orchard fruits (peach, apricot), tropical fruits (pineapple, mango and a couple passion fruits) and vanilla. Quite the ‘christmassy’ dram this. Moist fruit cake, cream, copper and herbs. Plenty of sweetness, buttery, Christmas spices and herbs. Lots going on! Sweet and spicy with a bit of chilli pepper tingling on the tongue. Very crisp. Orchard fruits (pear, apple) and lemon play well with a gentle pinch of pepper and some caramel and vanilla extract. A bit of wood dryness but quite soft. Finish Excerpt: The taste is buttery-smooth with good fruity notes of peaches, orange peel, a hint of red apples, subtle spices, honey, and a soft oakiness. The finish is long with a hint of pipe tobacco smoke and dried fruits. You are responsible for all activities through your account. B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Mouth: it feels rather weak and faded now. There seems to be a nice, slightly tropical fruity note but it fails to come out. Instead it displays a woodiness (of course) which gives some milky notes and a sour edge. A little smoke, toffee and fruit tea. Cloves and nutmeg. Made using a combination of peated and unpeated spirit, Seven Wood starts in first-fill ex-bourbon American white oak and is then finished in six French oak barrels from Vosges, Limousin, Tronçais, Allier, Jupilles and Les Bertranges.

Nose: A nice absence of ethanol allows the immediate experience of the lovely sweet and woody aromas.

Jura Seven Wood Details

Excerpt: Those looking for something off the beaten path may quite enjoy this, but it does tend to wander fairly far afield and never finds much in the way of balance. Appearance: Jura Seven wood: Nice deep rich amber, clings to the glass well, nice and oily! The first impression on the nose is brown sugar sweet shop candy and, of course, oaky notes. Good start for sure!

White fruits (pear, white grapes, apricot), mint tea with two sugars, sap, candle wax, this is fresh and lovely. Time enhances the citrus notes of lemon peels, marzipan, almost “Calisson d’Aix” sweets (mostly marzipan, sugar, melon confit). Palate It began being sold as single malt in 1974, and the range has grown steadily since. The start of peating saw some smoky whisky being included in the no-age Superstition brand, launched in 2002, while a 100% smoked Prophecy was released in 2009.Although the large southern Hebridean island of Jura has always been sparsely populated, it has a fascinating distilling heritage. In the 18th century,it was reported that islanders made spirit from rowan berries, as well as using the bitter fruit to acidulate their whisky punch. Fresh, crisp, flavourful as promised by the idea behind The Whisky Works, I think they did transform their first try. The goal for Gregg Glass was to obtain a lovely freshness allowing the core orchard fruits characters to come through, using Highland oak to accentuate that without overpowering the recipe. I think it’s mission complete. The orchard fruits are really here, complemented by mint and lemon juice on the nose, and lemon again but with a bit of chilli on the palate, and the wood being noticeable without being overpowering as he wanted. This is well done and I like it a lot. Rating: 84/100 Nose: Apple pie filling with hints of cinnamon and hints of smoke, but not what I was expecting. It was more of a sweet pulled pork scent than peat reek stings, and it stung my nose a bit, as if it was a much higher proof. I also get a bit of cherry cough drops and mint chocolate.
