The Canon EOS 1100D featured a 2.7in, 230,000-dot LCD which, by today’s standards, is very low resolution. Thankfully, this has been improved in the 1200D, which features a 3in TFT LCD display with a resolution of 460,000 dots. This still isn’t on a par with many of the EOS 1200D’s competitors, but for the type of user this camera is designed for it is sufficient. Also, as the EOS 1200D is designed to a budget, it doesn’t feature any touchscreen functionality or screen articulation, but that is to be expected.

Although the Canon EOS 1200D doesn’t boast Wi-Fi on its spec sheet, it is still fully compatible with Eye-Fi memory cards, and Eye-Fi transfer can be enabled or disabled in the camera’s menu. With 30-years' worth of compatible Canon optics, and many third-party options from the likes of Sigma, Tamron and Samyang alongside, there's a good chance that if you can't find the lens you want at a price you're willing to pay, it simply doesn't exist. E-TTL II automatic built-in pop-up, 13m ISO 100 guide number, 27mm (equivalent in 35 format) lens focal length coverage; compatible with Canon EX Series Speedlite external hotshoe-mount flashes I found that using all nine focus points could sometimes throw the focus off the subject, especially with more complex compositions. This was due either to the main subject falling outside the focus point area or other objects being in the foreground, which the AF then prioritised over the intended subject. This is one area in which flexible AF points are an advantage. The T5 / 1200D’s built-in flash is popped up using a button just behind the main dial on the top of the grip. It’s not as odd a place for it as you might think because it’s programmable and can be assigned to ISO sensitivity. The flash is the same unit as on the earlier T3 / 1100D with a Guide Number of 9.2 in metres at 100 ISO. That’s a little less powerful than the Nikon D3300’s built-in flash which has a Guide Number of 12 and also offers wireless control with compatible Nikon units. With a GN of 9.2 the Sony A3000’s built-in flash has the same power output as the T5 / 1200. Both the T5 / 1200D and D3300 have a hotshoe, as does the Sony A3000, but the latter is Sony’s multi-interface shoe which can take an external flash as well as other accessories. The Canon EOS 1200D's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The available white balance settings are Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash and Custom; there is no way to enter a Kelvin value manually. You can fine-tune any of the presets using the White Balance Correction feature. The ISO speed can be changed by pressing the ISO button and turning the control wheel or using the arrow buttons on the navigation pad. You do not have to hold down the button while changing the setting. The ISO speed can be set from ISO 100 to ISO 6400 in full-stop increments, and Auto ISO is also available. Whereas at one time the cheaper DSLR in any manufacturer's range involved investing in a quartet of AA batteries to slot into its handgrip, even this cheapest Canon offers a rechargeable lithium-ion battery off the bat, and a standalone LP-E10 charger to replenish it with. The screen’s refresh rate is very fast and the viewing angle is equally as good. The screen isn’t too reflective, even in bright, sunny conditions, and all the settings are still readable on the LCD.
