Description

The thrilling retelling of a real-life hostage rescue mission, by SAS hero and million-selling author, Andy McNab. When Lingard and Mrs Travers reach the Emma Jorgenson is truculent and hostile . Lingard questions Mrs Travers somewhat jealously about d'Alcacer, whilst she in her turn thinks that Lingard is enamoured of Immada, by who they are joined on board with Hassim. One of the love options was incredibly creepy from the start and, although it seemed like Bettina could sense that, she was not heeding the red flags. I cannot say I was extremely fond of the other option, either, and I did feel he did a few uncomfortable things, but I’d still choose him over what was behind door number two.

Field, Louise Maunsell. "CONRAD'S ART SPANS TWO DECADES: Unique Task Accomplished in "The Rescue"" Rev. of The Rescue by Joseph Conrad. New York Times 23 May 1920: BR1. ProQuest Historical Newspapers. Web. 25 April 2014. RESCUE is a tale of dauntless courage, family bonds, and spy codes, told in Nielsen's easy and nostalgic writing style.

This was all happening in 1996, and 1996 was a pretty eventful year for me. 1996 was the year my father died. In 1996, I was still worried about my sister’s health, and 1996 was the year The Notebook was published. Needless to say, there was a lot going on that year. It was actually the POV from the various humans in this street dog's life that were clunky and pulled emotion away from the story. First: A big thank you to Goodreads Giveaways for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. Captain Stewart was part of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), as was Meg's father, and he arrived in France with his bag of spy tools, including a spy manual, which Meg refers to often. I liked that Nielsen used the rules from the book for some of her chapter headings. Since they worked in so well with what happens in the chapters they head, I suspect it was a made up book, but fun nevertheless.

This author is an auto read for me, so I don't really pay attention to what the new book is about, just know when it comes out and I request it from the library. So I had no clue what this about going in, but I loved it! I really loved how we got so much of Joe/Felix's life, what he liked, what he didn't, what he knew, what he didn't. All this around several humans who were really going through some things.Characters: Meg was a well-developed character. She was brave and determined, but she realistically didn't always have the right answers or know what to do. The book covers multiple POVs and time periods. One of those POVs is Felix’s, the dog. I can struggle with books where dogs are anthropomorphized. And I had mixed feelings here. It worked fine when Parker limited Felix’s understanding to a few words, expressions and emotions. When he tried to veer further afield, I had problems. It sometimes got a little clunky when Parker would contain plot points in Felix/Joe’s section and then clarify that the dog didn’t understand what was happening or being said. As noted, I came into this one with a bit of skepticism and am leaving it pleasantly surprised. I'm always rooting for dogs, and if you are too, you might find something extra special here. If I were a better person, I might’ve felt guilty...My only regret was that we wouldn’t be here to see it” (167).

Overall, I really liked this book! It was engaging and interesting. Though it did not seem quite as rich in research as Resistance, it still seemed very accurate. Compare this book to the original. Can you make a list of similarities and differences between the two? This novel is described as a "Romance of the Shallows", it is also an adventure novel, specifically a sea story. From the beginning, readers are shown that the novel takes place at sea. There are many times when Lingard refers to himself as an adventurer or being on an adventure. Throughout the text, there are lengthy passages in which the plot comes to a halt while the stifling darkness is described. This helps create the atmosphere of an adventure novel as readers are held in suspense along with the characters. The European characters are depicted constantly interacting with the native peoples, a trope that is used in many adventure novels. Many adventure novels also have an exotic other, the role that the Malay tribes fill in The Rescue. This one is the story of 12-year-old Meg, who has been working for the Resistance in her small village in occupied France. After discovering an injured British spy, she sets off across France and through the French Alps to help smuggle three Germans to safety. She relies on the code games she had played with her father before he went undercover as well. An exciting adventure full of twists and turns. Who can Meg really trust on this perilous journey? Her father's fate lies in her hands. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.They take him to a training facility where they are impressed and state they want to train Joe to be a DEA drug-sniffer. Sure,” we said, figuring that the doctor was going to show him one of those models of a skeleton or something like that. A few minutes later, the doctor returned with Ryan, a serious expression on his face. Who among us wouldn’t put up a huge fight for our pet? We love them like family, right? So it’s easy to sympathize with Bettina while immersed in THE RESCUE. Figuring out how she can solve her problem, though? Well, it’s a good thing that T. Jefferson Parker is there to come up with the solution. Things look pretty grim for both Felix and Bettina, but Parker finds a miraculous way out. Bravo! An American reporter rescues a Mexican street dog that was wounded in a gunfight and when the drug dealers, DEA, and various past owners find out from her stories that the dog is alive, they all come after her and the dog. DNF I have really appreciated Nielsen's other middle-grade historical fiction, and the French Resistance fighters were incredible -- so I was looking forward to her take on the topic.
