However, I started my walk, miscellaneously perhaps, at Haymarket, in the hopes of drawing a comparison to Dickens description as one ‘the worst kept part of London’. Displaying all the finesse and sharp observation of character he is known for in his fiction works, this truly shows Victorian London through his eyes and how the populace suffered in the burgeoning city. Each word, in my most humble but assertive opinion, was a stroke, which upon putting them all together reveals this brilliant and elegant masterpiece. Even if you now the City of London very well (like me) you will get new inspiration by joining Dickens on his walks through town.It's eye-opening to read Dickens' short pieces, and remember that before he became a part of foundational literature, he wrote odd pieces to help him process his insomnia and pay the bills. I’ve only read the first short piece so far, the one that has given the book it’s title – Night Walks. Charles Dickens describes in Night Walks his time as an insomniac, when he decided to cure himself by walking through London in the small hours, and discovered homelessness, drunkenness and vice on the streets.

It was due to a “distressing impression” and led to his wandering the streets of London all night during a series of several nights. His nighttime rambles take him to Newgate Prison, Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey and other locales. I highly recommend this if you are new to Dickens and want to have a taste of his style, whilst nonfiction it retains a strong narrative plot throughout. I suspect my ignorance of the time period prevented me from latching on to any narrative flow that might have carried me through.My Night walk, based on Charles Dickens Night walk, takes me on a circumference between Westminster bridge to the west, waterloo bridge at the centre and London bridge to the east. Dickens was always interested in social reform and his walks tend to take him to the seedier parts of the capital.

The stories stand alone by themselves and are indicative of a great and creative imagination based on real life events. To my south east I went down Dickens memory lane to Bench Parks marshalsea prison and the imperial war museum.
