I have to admit I had never come across the term "Bothy" and was intrigued when the book landed on my door mat. A celebration of 26 of the author’s favourite bothies, as she shares her memories of her favourite ‘stone tents’ all over the UK in remote and wild locations. Written by the founder of the ‘Bothies on a Bike’ blog, it offers detailed information on the locations and approach routes by foot, canoe and bicycle and highlights the best bothies for Munros, beach, seclusion and families. And not just Scotland, of the 26 bothies discussed in detail between the covers of this book, 16 are in Scotland, 4 are in England and 4 are in Wales. A celebration of 26 of the author's favourite bothies, as she shares her memories of her favourite 'stone tents' all over the UK in remote and wild locations.

In addition, each has a picture of the inside and outside and a copy of notes left by the author for each visit. The format is a good one, with each bothy having a main piece of text complemented by bite-sized snippets and information panels. What will become of Tom, and how in fact did his girlfriend die, and will her criminal family find him? It will come as no surprise that most of the 26 bothies covered in this book are in Scotland – 18 in Scotland, 4 in England and 4 in Wales. For each bothy featured there is an Ordnance Survey map with grid reference and descriptions of two access routes, one the direct or “classic” with a longer “challenging” alternative for hill-baggers and those who have time and inclination. Each section is further split into each bothy with a local map, description of how to get there and what facilities it has.

Great little coffee table book, but also if you're a serious hiker this is truly AMAZING because it gives exact descriptions and coordinates of how to reach these neat little houses. Scotland - Highlands and Isle of Skye, Glenduror Forest, Fort Augustus, Spean Bridge, Rannoch Moor, Cairngorms, Galloway Forest, Fisherfield, Sandwood Bay, Oykel Bridge. A photographer, surveyor and ex-maintenance officer for Dibidil – a Mountain Bothy Association’s bothy on the Isle of Rùm – he is your perfect guide to exploring Scotland’s wild places. To get straight to After all; out there in the sticks of the back of beyond, rarely seen and infrequently used makes it easy to overlook an unparalleled social legacy. The final page on each bothy lists an alternative route, Top Tip (if there is one) and ‘Essentials’ (see photo 6). However it always surprises me how many Gorm lovers don’t seem to regularly and significantly donate to the Mar Lodge footpath fund , or regular Gorm bothy users to the MBA , or to the NE Mountain Trust, or the Cairngorms Campaign etc, etc. however, the maps were rough hand-drawn, artistic yes, but of zero navigational value, which was a great disappointment.
