Visconti later said the performance of "Southbound" came from a soundcheck before one of the Philadelphia gigs, with the audience reaction dubbed from another song. Therefore, this makes the extra seven discs so compelling, as they are all ‘as live’ before selected tracks were embellished for final release. The final disc features the band ripping through the full album in London in 1978, without overdubs. The set, originally spread across two vinyl discs, but now on one CD draws from Lizzy's six studio albums released between 1973 and 1977, but majors on their '76 magnus opus "Jailbreak" which alone contributes five of the seventeen tracks. It deserves to be there and I know many of you reading this will already have several copies of this album!

of them fell out during the transport - even worse, 3 of the most generously scratched CDs kept occasionally skipping and ultimately freezing on the same track on every player I tried, even after I thoroughly cleaned them a number of times. Live and Dangerous was released in 1978 and is arguably one of the best live albums of all time It was recorded in London and Toronto in 1977, during the tours accompanying the albums Johnny the Fox and Bad Reputation. Compiled (and then overdubbed - so what and who cares anyway) from recordings of Thin Lizzy's 1976 "Johnny The Fox" and 1977 "Bad Reputation" tours "Live and Dangerous" showcases Thin Lizzy when the band was at its all too short peak with the Lynott, Gorham, Robertson and Downey line-up. It won’t change the face of music or knock the world off its axis, but Hell, Fire And Damnation is yet another damned fine addition. He has said the album is almost all live, and the sound levels on stage would make overdubbing impossible due to the lack of acoustic separation between instruments. The package is rounded off with sleeve notes by mojo’s Mark Blake and has a booklet packed with rare photos and memorabilia. All the rumours of the album being tweaked in the studio are about to be laid bare because now we can hear each night in its entirety! We get the three Hammersmith Odeon shows, two from The Tower Theatre, Philadelphia in October ’77, one from Seneca College Field House, Toronto that same month, plus Lizzy’s March ’78 show at the Rainbow theatre in London.

Stuart Bailie in his review for Classic Rock magazine praised the quality of the music and played down rumours of studio overdubbing. Here was a band so photogenic they could have helmed Paris Fashion Week, should its ’70s purview have alighted on hard rock couture.

The band began touring to promote the album, but after a one-off gig in Ibiza, Lynott and Robertson had an acrimonious argument. For three nights, Visconti would attempt to capture the juggernaut live show that Lynott’s illness had derailed in the US. With the 3 Hammersmith nights from 1976, 2 Philadelphia shows from 1977, the Toronto show from 1977 and the Rainbow theatre show from 1978, there’s a lot to listen to.
