Description

However, as the play goes on she disobeys her father several times, including by talking to Ferdinand when she has been told not to and helping him with his physical tasks. The only other inhabitants of the island are the spirits including Ariel, whom Prospero had rescued from imprisonment in a tree. Much of the above is behaviour with good intentions but still, the effect is the suffering of others. Her tenderness is also evident when she begs her father not to use magic to control Ferdinand, whom she loves.

Shakespeare’s The Tempest plot summary - The Tempest - BBC

He is remembered by Prospero for his kindness in making sure that supplies, clothing and books were put aboard the boat when Prospero and Miranda were cast out to sea.Her attitude towards the discovered peoples as well as the newly discovered castaway sharply contrasts her father's inclination to conquer and destroy, painting her not only as a compassionate figure but as one sympathetic to the colonial plight. He recites some lines of Prospero's speech before asking Captain Picard ( Patrick Stewart) to provide some insight into the character of Prospero and Shakespeare's The Tempest in general.

Miranda (The Tempest) - Wikipedia

In the view of the audience, this may have been required to make the ending unambiguously happy, as magic was associated with diabolical works.Meanwhile Caliban’s crazies are all off to kill Prospero, so Ariel distracts them with magical clothes and then chases them away with spirit dogs. Alonso thinks he is dead because he has not seen his son since the ship sank, but Ferdinand has washed up on another part of the island. Just as the celebrations come to an end, Prospero remembers Caliban’s plot against his life, and asks Ariel to help him. For, as Harold Bloom has pointed out in Shakespeare: The Invention Of The Human , Caliban is also a case of failed adoption: Prospero has tried to take ‘this thing of darkness’ under his wing and treat him as his adopted son, educating him and including him as part of his ‘family’. He is mischievous and ubiquitous, able to traverse the length of the island in an instant and to change shapes at will.
