This controller has everything: field weakening (allowing higher rpm), totally plug n play and now with tunable PAS via our new Electron display. A 52v battery will give a higher peak power output (in full power mode). If the motor isn’t used on its performance limit then it should run slightly cooler, as less current will be required to achieve the same power level (when compared with a 48v). This is very small though – example: 48v x 20A = 960w / 52v x 18.5A = 962w. Karl blew out his nylon gear which may very well be the weak point in the bbshd, and he did so riding at top speed until his drive got hot and seemed to have melted the gear.

If you have a newer BBS02B you are probably fine, if you have an older controller it might not be a good idea to flash this firmware. Revision BBSHD Mid Drive kit is light but strong and unprecedented levels of engineering (Rated 1000W – 1600W dependent on setting and have a proven to work reliably at 2800Watts) and Max Torque 160 NM) More efficient than HUB motors giving greater distance and response. This mid drive provides powerful ebike performance meanwhile keeps the original pedalling in comfort. With an integrated speed sensor, this mid-drive motor is compatible with standard bikes. 9 power levels available with “on the fly” switching.I prefer a 52v battery. Having the higher start voltage is advantageous as it means the motor will be producing optimum power for longer versus the 48v battery. Another benefit is the same power can be achieved with a slightly lower current, reducing heat build-up. These batteries have been designed for the Bafang BBSHD and other electric bike motors that have a rated up to 50Amp or up to 2200 watt motor. These will handle all 50A or lower 48/52V applications but have been specifically built for the Bafang BBSHD. They will burst much higher but we do not recommend running these constantly at high (50A) Generally this stops at ’35’ or 3.5v. What that gives you is, effectively, a throttle that has two speeds: Completely Off and Full Blast. Not really but it will feel like it. We were hitting speeds of 35mph the acceleration was super brisk when on the street….but most amazing is how quiet and smooth the bike was. Just amazing. We ship the controller with 9 power levels that can be independently set by yourself via the display. Maximum available power (48/52v) is 28000W and 3250W for 72v set up.

This is a big one. Current decay helps decide when your motor cuts power based on your cadence. A huge complaint about cadence sensing is it causes the bike to run away from you and the rider is just spinning the cranks… its called ‘ghost pedaling’. This is part of a complete solution to that problem. The bare BBSHD (68mm version) motor weighs 5.9kg (not including chainwheel, display, cables etc.). Shipped weight is ~8.3kg including standard Chainwheel. If there is such a thing as a bible on how to program your BBSHD, its Karl Gesslein’s blog post on the subject ( read it here). One thing is for sure…this beauty will not waken the neighbors. This bike is so silent I am really aware that nobody can hear me coming…and I am afraid for someone to walk out in front of me. Going this fast and being this quiet is a scary sensation. The motor with the correct battery is capable of speeds over 30 MPH, however riding the bike correctly will ensure longevity.The table below states the maximum possible power output for the 48v and 52v batteries.
