I have been a huge fan since I first borrowed a copy of Light A Penny Candlefrom my mother’s book shelf in my late teens. She explores the darker secrets of Irish culture, the ones people didn’t talk about, but also shows real love of all kinds.

Oh, sure, I didn’t see it mentioned much anymore, but after all there are an awful lot of movies out there. This book starts off very slowly, with an opening chapter regarding the meeting of Benny and Eve (the main characters of the novel). Maeve Binchy has a very simple writing, but it captures you, or rather that reader’s emotionality part that makes you turn the pages without being able to put down the book. Binchy’s trademark warmth, humor, and humanity characterize this volume, which collects five decades of her reporting for the Irish Times (1960s–2000s).Binchy’s prose doesn’t flow with descriptive elegance; her very simple language and the way she weaves her story awed me.

But Maeve Binchy is the reason I feel in love with this genre in the beginning and she will always hold a special place in my heart. Bound in green leather with hubbed spines, gilt page edges, gilt titles/decorations on spine and boards, marbled endpapers, and ribbon page marker. This book focuses on Benny and best friend Eve leaving their small, country town to attend college in Dublin.Gillianren is a forty-something bipolar woman living in the Pacific Northwest after growing up in Los Angeles County.

Overall it's a decent book but the point of view switching so heavily isn't something I enjoy in comparison to limited POV or singular, and the length doesn't quite justify the content. Sometimes, I felt the author seemed to tempt me with some kind of worthy 3-dimensional character in Nan or Benny, only to have that snatched away by a scene that portrayed them as inconsistent or backward from how I had pictured them. This circle of friends is shocked when Jack falls in love with Benny – ostensibly, he is way out of her league. My favorite aspect of this book is the characters and my absolute favorite is Benny Hogan, our main character. And she pokes fun at Irish small-town life with many vignettes of townspeople " playing telephone", recording their disparate reactions to what is going on around them. You can also listen on any Alexa-enabled device, compatible Fire tablets, Kindles, Sonos devices and more. Characters are mainly likeable, especially the main Benny and her friend Eve, two girls who bonded despite being in such different circumstances.
