Description

Star Wars boasts a most impressive roster of licensed tabletop games that can compete with the best space board games out there, and Star Wars Villainous is no different. It’s the latest core game in the much-loved Villainous series that launched in 2018 with Disney Villainous and subsequently Marvel Villainous (2020) alongside a plethora of expansions. Cards in the Deep Space area are considered to be in your Sector. Villain cards should be played on the bottom half of the Deep Space area, and Fate cards should be played on the top half, maintaining the general layout of cards within your Sector. The Villain Movers are beautifully designed, but the flakes embedded within each figure aren’t evenly distributed and can make them look unintentionally damaged. The Disney Villainous series began in 2018 with Disney Villainous: The Worst Takes It All, featuring Captain Hook, Maleficent, Jafar, and others. The game asks players to take on the role of famous Disney villains, working against each other to become the first to enact their own unique goals and objectives. Star Wars Villainous: Power of the Dark Side debuted in 2022, adding famous characters like Darth Vader, as well as vehicles and other mechanics, to the award-winning series known for its meaty, yet welcoming, strategic gameplay. This next product is both an expansion and a stand-alone game, allowing players to experience the core Star Wars Villainous experience for the first time or mix and match characters with the Power of the Dark Side product that came before it. Star Wars™ Villainous uses the award-winning Villainous game system with added elements to fully immerse players in the Star Wars™ Universe. Deploy iconic ships like TIE Fighters as you engage with the Millennium Falcon. Use Ambition to power your Villain’s unique abilities. Star Wars is one of my favorite properties and has been for decades," says Mike Mulvihill, Game Developer and Villainous Lead at Ravensburger. "We're particularly excited to bring the iconic Star Wars ships into the game. These 'Vehicle' cards introduce new actions to each Villain's sector and can engage with each other."Manage cookie settings Watch on YouTube Wheels shares some of the most exciting upcoming board games. Certain cards have a Cost showing an Ambition symbol in the lower left of the card art image, indicating that the card can only be played using an Ambition action, and by spending that amount of Ambition. When Star Wars Villainous was released we knew it was only a matter of time before an expansion would be announced. After all, just like the Disney universe which gave birth to this game system, the Star Wars galaxy contains a vast amount of villains in addition to those presented in the original release. So imagine our excitement when Ravensburger dropped the news that a new instalment is on the way… Star Wars Villainous: Scum and Villainy. Whether you’re gaming with your family, friends, or a group of Star Wars™ fans, Star Wars™ (Power of the Dark Side) Villainous is a great fit. Sometimes this blooming does take the color out to the edge of the surface,” Webb said, “so you’ll see that really sharp color pop through on the surface, and then it’ll recede as it goes in.” Two major additions that sets Star Wars Villainous apart from its predecessors are the introduction of Ambition and Vehicles. The former acts as a second currency alongside Credit Tokens and is collected in a variety of ways including one token at the beginning of every turn. Some cards require Credits to play, while others require Ambition. The currency can also be used to activate card abilities and in some cases win the game –once other criteria are met.In Villainous, you’ll play as an iconic Star Wars™ Villain. Choose Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, General Grievous, Asajj Ventress, or Moff Gideon. Each Villain has a unique objective and abilities based on their story and abilities. You’ll also meddle with your opponents by playing forcing them to face off against Jedi and heroes like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka Tano. It’s a nice selection covering the width and breadth of the Skywalker Saga timeline, whether you’re a fan of the originals, prequels or sequels.

Each villain has a small board called a Sector, which houses their mover and informs their actions during the game. Neat additions for new players are five unique Villain Guides that explain a few key details about each character and five identical Reference Charts that briefly explain what all of the action icons mean and each of the villains’ objectives. It’s worth mentioning that the Activate action is not used by any villain and will presumably come into play via future expansions. Star Wars Villainous will let you play as Darth Vader, Clone Wars and Mandalorian baddies, but not the Emperor If you like the concept of this game but are put off by the learning curve, the obvious alternative is the original Disney Villanous game. It’s similar but simpler, and still a lot of fun. And maybe your family and friends will prefer the idea of playing Maleficent or Captain Hook over characters from Star Wars. There’s a Marvel Villainous too if that strikes your fancy.Star Wars Villainous will be the first in what is now the franchise’s third game system, the first two being Disney Villainous and Marvel Villainous. Characters aren’t compatible between the three systems, so no putting Thanos up against Hades or Darth Vader for instance. But that means Star Wars Villainous’ new mechanics are also unique and distinct. If you enjoy the Star Wars licence there are lots of other games to consider but they’re all very different from Villainous and most are as much, if not more, complicated. Perhaps the most accessible is Star Wars: X-Wing, where you fly ready-painted models of iconic ships in deep space dogfights. It looks great and plays great but be aware that it’s the thin end of a wedge, with eye-popping numbers of additional ships available if you want them. First unveiled in 2018, Disney Villainous: The Worst Takes All flipped the script in the world of tabletop gaming by allowing players to take on the roles of infamous evildoers from classic Disney animated films. That initial title was developed by Prospero Hall ( now part of Funko Games) and included Maleficent ( Sleeping Beauty), Ursula ( The Little Mermaid), Jafar ( Aladdin), Prince John ( Robin Hood), Queen of Hearts ( Alice in Wonderland), and Captain Hook ( Peter Pan). There was something for every kind of classic Disney animation fan — including compelling, card-based gameplay and a hefty dose of screw-your-neighbor-style competition. The Villainous series is now developed in-house and published internationally by Ravensburger. Each player takes the role of a different Disney Villain. Each Villain has a different Objective they are trying to achieve. Each turn, players move their Villain Mover to a location on their Board and perform actions that are available there. As soon as a player has fulfilled their Villain's Objective, the game ends and that player wins.
