So as you can tell I do not vibe with that big of an age gap. like bro, he could be her dad, easily. But then I love the romance and their relationship! UGHHHHH this book is actually making my skull split in two! The final third of the book was my favourite, as the past comes to a head and so does all the build-up of Ellie's (and which girl she was) worry about what both men from her past appearing now means. It all resolved neatly and I found I was surprised. I think I'd been expecting a messier end or some sort of fallout but that wasn't the point here. There's gratitude, hope and contentment which is, all things considered, a nice place to end up. This was supposed to be a buddy read with my friend, Deidra, but the book was annoying me-- and not in a "so bad it's fun" way, but in an "OMG NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN" sort of way, so I ended up jumping ship at 12% because I'm a bad friend. But life's too short to read bad books. The story wraps up in a way that felt natural, and true to the characters we had come to know at the party, throughout the evening. It may take an extra minute for the two timelines to match up once the reader has gotten through all the twists and turns, but all the questions do get answered.

BIRTHDAY GIRL – Pen Douglas

There’s something about forbidden romances/taboo topics that tests and pushes and makes you questions your original stances on it, whatever they may have been, and from whatever preconceived notions they may have originated from. Overall, everything about this novel is just meant to be read and thoroughly enjoy. If you are an individual with an age gap issue, then skip this book. However, if you are interested I recommend hoping on this bad boy and riding it like there is no tomorrow. One thing is for sure that has me excited for more books by Pen, her surprise reveal of Motel is coming our way, and Danni (the female main character) will definitely have me on the verge of mystery behind her story. Thank you so much to Penelope for sending me a copy of her novel, one in which I am looking forward to re-reading in the future because this girl finds her forbidden fruit something to absolutely cherish. Her books for adults include the novel Cat’s Meow, the anthology Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys and the tongue-in-chic handbooks How to Become Famous in Two Weeks or Less and The Fashionista Files: Adventures in Four-inch heels and Faux-Pas. A forbidden fruit, a romance filled with angst, and the struggle of battling your inner thoughts of the forbidden and desires, making your craving enhance more and more for Pike and Jordan...

Good girl, who loves kink? Stop! We are NOT talking about me..... It's Jordan 👀 stop giving me those suspicious stares If you love forbidden romance, slow burn romance, FANTASTIC sexual tension, a hero who is quite older and is super mature and charming, STEAMY AS HELL sex scenes, and angst, then this is the perfect book! In all seriousness, she did have to grow up young due to some unfortunate life experiences. I just don't understand why all the heroines in age gap romances have to be obsessed with vintage shit. Especially since they act relatively their own age.... Does liking your grandma's sweaters instantly make you seem more mature or am I missing something? I really wanted to like this book; the premise was great, the characters are clever, there's just the right amount of suspense. Ultimately though, The Birthday Girl was just meh. The characters' pasts and presents are so different, it's astonishing to think only 20-something years had past and that much had changed. Then there's the birthday party, for so much to happen in one evening, for everyone to be there, was unbelievable. I went from intrigued and really captivated, to wanting to skim, bored by the mixed in drama that took away from the mystery. In particular, there is one scene that involved papers being served and I just rolled my eyes. Yes, life is dramatic and yes this is a fiction, but this was a stretch on how life events unfold. I honestly have been holding off this review because I don’t know how to explain what I think, at ALL

Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas | Goodreads

The Birthday Girl is a dramatic (lots ‘o drama!) mystery. I wondered throughout who Ellie really was and what had happened. Her upbringing was very different than her adult life.

so if you're into stories with taboo, great plot, and bumping uglies you've got to add this to ur TBR.

The Birthday Girl is sort of a combination between Contemporary Women's Fiction and a thriller. However to me the thriller/suspense part only really happens towards the very end. This is my first book by this author. Jordan is a heroine that's impossible not to like. Mature beyond her years due to the way she grew up, this is not your typical 19 year old. With a mother that left years ago and a deadbeat trailer trash father, it's been her and her older sister fending for themselves. With an adorable adoration of all things 80s, Jordan was easy to connect with. While her sister has no problem supporting herself and young child by being a stripper, Jordan wants more. Moving in with her boyfriend's father rent free will allow her to save up enough to put herself on her feet and to get that more that she craves. But it also brings a whole lot more complications in the form of an interaction to her boyfriend's young father that seems to only intensify over time. It’s been 2 hours since I finished Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas and I don’t quite know what to do with myself. I've been putting off this review because quite a few of my friends on here love this! Apologies to those of you who did love this, please don't be offended, different tastes and all that..... Ellie de Florent-Stinson is about to celebrate her 40th Birthday. And it will be the party that spears no indulgence. This soiree is not only for her celebration, but a showcase to the rich and famous that she has entered their world. To prove to herself she has shed the past of the family's trailer, the felon father and the absentee mother. The past part of the story was interesting. But I just wish that the book had been more focused on the present. And I wanted a lot more to be happening in the present. Told with alternating timelines - past (24 years ago) and present (birthday party). The past timeline is about Leo and Mish, two girls from the wrong side of town, on the night of Leo's 16th birthday. They are best friends and excited to go out and celebrate, but things do not end happily. The present timeline is about Ellie, her lavish party, and the things happening in her life. Interesting! I don’t mind a bit of angst here and there – haha. But not too much! Bummer that things weren’t resolved in a satisfactory way. I would call this more of a mystery than a thriller for it having multiple POVs and time periods that are intended to set up the “unexpected” twist (although frequent readers of the domestic “thriller” genre would expect). But it isn’t really a thriller, so if you’re going to be disappointed that it isn’t just skip it.
