Description

To test ESP, Rhine relied mainly on a card-guessing task that used a set of special cards designed by Karl Zener. Card guessing to test ESP is still used by some parapsychologists, although the method has been largely overtaken in recent years by more elaborate and engaging procedures. These include the use of 'free response' tests in which participants attempt to form impressions about a concealed photograph or video clip. Early ESP cards test Cerullo, John. (1982). Secularization of the Soul: Psychical Research in Modern Britain. Philadelphia: Institute for the Study of Human Issues. ISBN 978-0897270281 Each house is traditionally associated with a specific area or aspect of human life and activity. For example, the first house indicates beginnings, the self and physical body, the second house represents possessions, money and other material concerns (see the house diagram). The word "psychic" is derived from the Greek word psychikos ("of the mind" or "mental"), and refers in part to the human mind or psyche (ex. "psychic turmoil"). The Greek word also means "soul". In Greek mythology, the maiden Psyche was the deification of the human soul. The word derivation of the Latin psȳchē is from the Greek psȳchḗ, literally "breath", derivative of psȳ́chein, to breathe or to blow (hence, to live). As the Spiritualist movement grew, other comparable groups arose, including the Theosophical Society, which was co-founded in 1875 by Helena Blavatsky (1831–1891). Theosophy coupled spiritualist elements with Eastern mysticism and was influential in the early 20th century, later influencing the New Age movement during the 1970s. Blavatsky herself claimed numerous psychic powers. [22] Late twentieth century Psychokinesis (PK) refers to the apparent ability of some individuals to paranormally affect physical processes using mental powers. Because poltergeist phenomena tend to focus around the poltergeist agent, it is suggested that they are caused by spontaneous eruptions of the agent's latent psychokinetic powers. As poltergeist outbreaks are usually associated with high levels of emotional stress, it is also presumed that this may amplify the agent's psychokinetic energies until they eventually explode in the form of poltergeist activity.

New Year in the Chinese Calendar

Similar cycles apply to the months, days, and hours. This permits an analysis of the Four Pillars of Destiny (八字, Ba Zi) that are believed to characterize a person's path through life, based on considering the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of birth. When interpreting the astrological geomancy chart, the significance of each geomantic figure is understood to apply specifically to the area or aspect of human life corresponding to the astrological house. In the 1930s, at Duke University, Joseph Banks Rhine established the world's first laboratory dedicated to formal experimental testing of psychic abilities.

The most important of the sixteen generated figures for interpretive purposes are the final four (the so-called First and Second Witnesses, the Judge and, optionally, the Reconciler.

a b Oppenheim, Janet. (1988). The Other World: Spiritualism and Psychical Research in England, 1850-1914. Cambridge University Press. p. 53. ISBN 978-0521347679 "The British National Association of Spiritualists emerged from a meeting in Liverpool, in August 1873, sponsored by the local Psychological Society. Attendance was not confined to spiritualists from the immediate area, and among the participants were W. H. Harrison and Thomas Everitt from London. The meeting heard several papers advocating the benefits of national organization for the expansion and consolidation of British spiritualism, and these arguments carried the day. The conference resolved to form a national association, and initiative then passed to London, where the following year the BNAS commenced its activities. From 1875, it was comfortably housed at 38 Great Russell Street, the scene of its numerous stances, both public and private, committee meetings, lectures, and social gatherings." In addition to these, the Four Mothers (the initial figures from which all other figures are derived) can provide further insight. Psychological or psychiatric factors seem to play an important role in the majority of poltergeist cases, often contributing to the stress experienced by the agent. Most poltergeist agents are young children, or teenagers, who may be struggling to cope with the onset of puberty, with family tensions and other interpersonal difficulties, or with physical, verbal or sexual abuse. In many cases, the poltergeist outbreak is preceded by an identifiable emotional or interpersonal crisis.
