The first half of the book would have easily been rated a 2 or 3 stars, just average if not a bit overly complex. A Slow Fire Burning absolutely held me with its compelling, multi-generational cast of women and the brilliantly evoked pathos of damaged lives. An unflinching look at the damage sparked by grief, loss and betrayal - and the revenge and retribution that ensues.

Tenuous connections, deception, and betrayal embroil members of a family, a pitiable young woman, and a meddlesome middle-aged spinster in the investigation that ensues. She dropped the bra on the floor too, clambered into the bathtub, and turned on the shower, then stood shivering under the paltry trickle of scalding water (her shower offered a choice of very hot or very cold, nothing in between). International bestselling author Paula Hawkins may always be best-known for her record-shattering debut, The Girl on the Train. While the structure of the novel is a murder mystery, the killer’s identity is almost the least interesting aspect of the book.

She was out on the back deck, checking she had a clear run-that there weren't any obstacles on the path, bicycles, or bottles (people could be extremely antisocial, particularly late on Saturday nights). Some people come and go regularly; they have a patch, a stretch of the water they like to cover, so you get to know some of them. It has the complexity of The Great Gatsby - everything was set up perfectly and was surprising at the end. Now, the master of the sophisticated psychological thriller is back again (second novel Into The Water was released in 2017 and gobbled up by fans) with the addictive A Slow Fire Burning.

I may be biased as I was expecting a book as extraordinary as ‘The Girl on the Train’ so therefore I left feeling mildly underwhelmed and wanting a hair more. Bending down when no such response came, her attempt to peer into the cabin thwarted by the net curtain coupled with what looked like a decade's worth of city and river grime. A short review on this one (I have read too many books on holiday on top of a backlog of reviews I already have.Laura was in a horrific accident when she was ten years old and has been left with significant injuries, including some social issues where she cannot control herself or act appropriately at times. the title, however, does not describe the book—this fire burns fast—a highly engaging page-turner that whisks the reader to and fro—edging close to the truth before shifting the focus away each time in a delicious flurry of NOT YET, MY LOVELIES!
