There were times where my sight would go out of bounds and didn’t reflect on-screen what I was doing with the controller. I’m in the old school camp and will tell you to ‘reach for the sky’ as in Mad Bullets, someone’s gonna get shot. The characters are slightly animated, but they are supposed to represent wooden boards – when you shoot them, they explode in fragments, and it’s pretty effective. To aim, you need to move your Joy-Con around thanks to the motion controls this will allow you to aim.

Instead, if an enemy shoots at you, it’s best to try to shoot the slow-moving bullet out of the sky. The graphics are bright and colourful and look great on the Switches’ screen, plus the frame-rate is pretty solid. You either duel weld two joy-cons and pretend your rogue cowboy or pass one them controllers to a friend or partner and have someone along for the ride. New mechanics like shooting locks, beer glasses from drunk men are introduced and keeps things interesting. We opted for a strategy of ‘you take the left side, I’ll take the right’, but the continual bullet slipping through or your partner shooting an explosive that takes off some health means it gets a bit of a free-for-all and everyone for themselves. Mad Bullets is a typical title I had never heard of, and it was only through my own ventures, that I found this title and have to say that this is one of those gems that you need to look into.

It’s a pain that you have to go out of the game and set up a second Joy-Con so that you can access one of the Switch’s main features. Since the days of Mad Dog McCree back in the arcades, then on Sega CD, there’s never really been a decent automated western shooter. If playing in singleplayer, you’re only ever going to have one Joy-Con activated unless you decide to dual weld. However, these are small issues that can be easily overcome, and they don’t ruin the main experience.
