Negan Smith tells Gabriel Stokes about Lucille, calling her his one, true wife that existed before the outbreak. Negan admits his sins in cheating on Lucille and how he couldn't bring himself to kill her after she reanimated. With tears in his eyes, Negan calls his inability to kill the reanimated Lucille his one weakness. And so, here we are: one final pit stop before the final ever season of The Walking Dead. These six bridge episodes have laid the groundwork for the forthcoming 11th chapter of the long-running zombie series with a fairly decent mix of bonus stories. We’ve seen the re-introduction of Maggie, learned of Daryl’s previously untold dalliance with Leah and got up-close-and-personal with the suspect soldiers of the Commonwealth. To cap it all off, season 10C concludes with a Negan-centric instalment that explores his mysterious pre-Saviors days. Here’s what went down… She is also one of nine survivors classified as being undead, the other eight being Jim, Callaway, Pete Dolgen, Eric Raleigh, Winslow, Matias, Clara and her husband Eddie.In the pre-apocalypse past, we learn Negan wasn’t a great guy. After beating a man so badly he had to be hospitalized, he loses his job as a high school gym teacher and counts on Lucille (his wife, not the bat) to pay the bills. He sits around at home playing video games and can’t be bothered to remember her doctor appointments, or bring her home from the hospital after she has an MRI. Neither of them is happy. In fact, there’s a tense scene where Lucille, after learning Negan is cheating on her with her best friend — oh, yeah, he’s also cheating on her with her best friend — appears to contemplate shooting her husband. But once she delivers the news that she has cancer, Negan starts to put some effort into their relationship. Fighting for Them Both Negan tells Anne about how he named his bat after Lucille. Lucille gave him the strength to go on in the world when it fell apart, so the bat is a symbolic extension of her, as the bat gives Negan strength to carry on. The depth of the love story told here, in less than an hour, was incredible and believable — it makes sense why Negan named his bat “Lucille.” Morgan and Burton did a phenomenal job. It’s good to know that Negan wasn’t always so brutal. In the early days of the end-of-days, we see a terrified Negan trying and failing to put a walker down by ineffectively stabbing it in the eye. He nearly becomes zombie supper but for Lucille, who fires the couple’s final bullet into the walker’s skull. Hey, we’ve all got to start somewhere when it comes to disposing of the undead, right? When Dwight decides to leave the Sanctuary and end his leadership, he takes Lucille with him and brings it to Alexandria. Ultimately, he carries it on his person during the Whisperer War.

On Talking Dead, Hilarie Burton Morgan stated that she believes that Lucille committed suicide the day Negan left to get her chemotherapy. Hilarie also reveals that she did the stunt where Negan finds Lucille with the plastic bag over her head herself and that Jeffrey Dean Morgan took a little too long removing it while shooting the scene. The scene at the end with Negan and the leader of the biker gang was lit and framed the same as the lineup scene from Season 7, which was an excellent way to show Negan’s transformation.
