Description

The group was founded by sisters June and Jean Millington (on guitar and bass respectively), who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. After playing through several variations of the band, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June quit the group, leading to the original line-up splitting. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. The Millington sisters have continued to play music together since the split, and with a former drummer, Brie Howard-Darling, formed the spin-off group Fanny Walked the Earth in 2018. The core line-up comprises sisters June and Jean Millington on guitar and bass, with drummer Brie Darling. This is essentially the original members of the Svelts, a precursor to Fanny. All three sing and contribute to the songwriting, making this a real group effort. Indeed, there’s a sincere unity of enthusiasm and punch, aligned with themes of feminism, determination and love, throughout. All rights reserved. Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws and not cool. Made in USA. Brie Darling remembers vividly the first time she met June and Jean Millington. It was 1966, and Darling had traveled from California to Nevada to audition for the Millington’s high school band, the Svelts, as their newest hot drummer during a performance at The Lemon Tree in the town of Sparks. Just 16 years old, Darling approached the sisters – whose music she already knew well – in the parking lot. What follows is a tonal shift, complete with footage of Jean Millington’s slow, but steady recovery, visits from Howard-Darling and June Millington and nostalgia for what could have been. All of this builds up to an intimate concert performed by Fanny Walked the Earth to support Jean Millington’s stroke recovery fund. Jean Millington’s musician son Lee stepped in for her on the bass, but Jean Millington still joined them on stage to sing. In a touching moment on stage, Jean Millington cries as her son hits the bass, overwhelmed by the emotion on stage. Patti Quatro continued to work as a session musician for her sister Suzi and was involved in the reissue of material by the Quatro sisters' early band the Pleasure Seekers. [33] Brie Brandt, later known as Brie Howard-Darling and currently as Brie Darling, had an active post-Fanny career, fronting the bands American Girls, which released one album in 1986, [34] and Boxing Gandhis, which has released four albums since the mid-1990s. [35] She has also acted in films such as 1982's Android [36] and is the mother of Playboy Playmate Brandi Brandt. [35] Quatro and Brandt both toured with Electric Light Orchestra and appeared on the album A New World Record in 1976. [37] [38]The band was then renamed Fanny, not with a sexual connotation but to denote a female spirit. [7] The initial lineup consisted of June on guitar, Jean on bass, de Buhr on drums, Barclay on keyboards, and Brandt on lead vocals and percussion. Perry dismissed Brandt because he wanted the group to be a self-contained four-piece band like the Beatles. [10] The Millingtons and Barclay all assumed lead vocal duties on alternating songs, while de Buhr sang lead occasionally on later albums. [11] Just who is Shinyribs? It’s a sprawling nine, sometimes 10-piece cast, but ultimately it is the funky brainchild of Kevin Russell, who grew up in Beaumont, TX and Shreveport, LA, the cradle of the swamp pop and bayou R&B sounds that drip off his fingers like honey and hot sauce. Think Gulf Coast meets Muscle Shoals with strong pop-song structures. Though there was an intense focus on the womanhood of Fanny, the idea that most of Fanny was Filipina-American did not receive any attention. June Millington says, “That part was kind of ignored, and that made it even worse. The terrible thing about racism is it can be so subtle. I knew I was being judged every second, so all I did was play as hard and as good as I could. I just knew I was representing something new.”

Sisters June and Jean Millington moved with their family from the Philippines to Sacramento, California, in 1961. They began to play music together on ukuleles, which helped them gain friends. In high school they formed an all-female band called the Svelts with June on guitar, Jean on bass, Addie Lee on guitar, and Brie Brandt on drums. Brandt left to get married and was later replaced by Alice de Buhr. [3]UNLV Libraries Digital Collections: Rebel Yell, 1986-04-08". digital.library.unlv.edu. They carried on in the UK, recording their fourth album, “ Mother’s Pride ,” with producer Todd Rundgren, but the pressure to record a hit was still mounting. The label went in a new direction, having the band dress in different, more revealing styles that June Millington wasn’t comfortable in. To make it worse, de Buhr and Jean Millington were still not allowed to publicly be lesbians. I still see that picture,” says Darling now. “They were just like goddesses to me. They looked bigger than life. And we just immediately bonded.”

Then, in 1972, they got a fan letter from David Bowie, which Millington ignored. “I didn’t know who he was,” she said. According to de Buhr, at the time, “The record company didn’t know what to do with us. They didn’t know how to market us.” Howard-Darling joined former band members in Los Angeles in 1970, forming a short-lived lineup of the all-female band Fanny as the lead singer. A decision was made to change the number of band members from five members to four creating more of a Fab Four image. She left the band and pursued other musical ventures.
