After this was completed (and the foam given more drying time so it would retain its shape) the entire form was covered in stretch fabric. This smoothed out a lot of the lumpiness of the foam To create a really worn look, I added bits of debris to the fiberglass resin. This made a convincing textured metal finish in the end, as these parts were painted to look like rust, dents, and bits of splicer. When I started planning my costume, I found myself headed into unknown waters. I’ve made a number of small, cobbled together props and some costume accessories over the years, but outside a few collaborations in college (building homecoming floats or making set pieces for charity events) I’ve never had a build on this scale . My most used methods for building things has, of late, involved 3D printing, epoxy, sanding, and painting. There was no way I’d be able to print this costume on my itty-bitty 3D printer, so I would have to try ( gasp!) something new!

After adding some details on the body with foam tape, more ureshell, and more resin, I had a finished form! After everything is dried paint everything with the hammered copper paint. I used the Krylon Hammered Copper paint to paint the cage and the drain attachments. Aside from the Alpha Series, Big Daddies communicate by uttering haunting sounds similar to that of whale calls. Alpha Series communicate with low, inhuman grunts and roars. For easier interpretation, production model Big Daddies have a bioluminescent chemical substance which filled the helmet, displaying its state of emotion or mind. [1] The Big Daddy has three different colors he will display. I started by cutting the R-Matte (RM) board into 3 - 3 ft sections. I then took and cut it into the rough cut=away shape. Also from the remaining R-matte board make a shoulder portion, a 3Ft circle for the front access port of the dome and then 2- 10" circles for the arms.

Starting with the blueprints printed at full scale (HUGE) I made cross sections out of insulation foam and glued them into place. The empty areas between sections were filled with cardboard. This formed what I called the "skeleton" of the body. Here is a 99% finished Big Daddy. I still needed to touch up the cage to cover the tape, but that was completed . As I placed the cardboard I tried to form the end shape of the body. your best bet is to cut you form down to a more permanent size at this point, so that there is only about a 2 -3" depth at the most from the cardboard to the top edge so that you don't go through as much expandable foam as I did. To Create the Cage I used the 1 1/2" Bi-metal hole saw to make a hole on the top of the body, and also a hole in the center of the chest plate in line with the hole on the top. The easiest way to do this was to take on foam pipe and put one end in the top and take the other end and insert it into the chest plate hole. Adjust this to create the arc of the cage. I added velcro to the bottom outer edge of the pants to attach the pants to the shoes so that it kept a uniform look.

Rapture Daily Post Article about Suchong: " Move over Brigid Tenenbaum! With his ever-growing reputation for sci-entific breakthrough, Dr. Yi Suchong may have stolen your title! From the innovative new, drinkable Plasmids, to the creation of the big daddies who built our city, Rapture’s leading medical researcher has been the mind behind it all."

Clear quilting ruler. This is helpful when needing to draw perpendicular lines, and even has a few basic angles you can use as well. A neat video of the drill working on YouTube while we were posing for the Friday Night Costume Contest photos: Since I was wearing the finished suit at Dragon*Con 2009, I don't have any pictures of my own to show! Instead, I hope the owners of these respective photographs (credited here) don't mind me showing them off a bit. My "Little Sister" is my Fiancee, Emily Keith. Our "Baby Jane Splicer" is our friend Mandie Reese.

The "housing" for this mechanism was made from a concrete tube, electrical conduit PVC and more foam tape. This was painted in ureshell to protect it during painting as well as to give it texture. After trimming the square edge off, I cut a disc from insulation foam to serve as the "ring" around the dome. However, Splicers continued to evolve over the years, making them more effective in ambushing Big Daddies. This forced Alexander to create a new model of Protector, the Rumbler, which was designed to effectively dispatch larger groups of enemies. [14] Stopping the Program [ ]I used two different types of blades: a utility knife (the type with snap-off blades), and a hobby knife (an x-acto knife) Since this is such a large project, I'll break down the build process into partitions: The main body, the dome, the drill arm, the dome cage, other details, and the final paintwork. From the time of its founding, maintenance of Rapture required trained divers in reinforced suits to walk outside along the seafloor to repair leaks and reinforce the city's structure. By the time of the Protector Program's tests, certain former citizens of Rapture had been genetically altered with ADAM and permanently sealed inside the special diving suits to become what were eventually called Big Daddies. They were genetically modified and conditioned in the research labs and facilities of Point Prometheus. Protector training was eventually done in the Proving Grounds. So far, there are five main types of Big Daddy protectors, including two elite versions for only the Bouncer and Rosie. Of the five protectors, the latest four are functional and protect the Little Sisters, as the original Alpha Series (with the exception of Subject Delta) were marked as a failure.
