The IPS panel can’t stop contrast suffering quite badly during viewing from an angle, though, giving us one apt final reminder that for all the things the 55QA5D63DB gets right, its problems with contrast are so fundamental during all but the most glaringly bright content that they’re really pretty hard to live with. In fact, we much prefer the pictures of Toshiba’s substantially cheaper 50UK4D63B, proving – not for the first time – that just throwing Quantum Dots at a screen isn’t the guarantee of better picture quality you might expect. At least at the budget end of the TV world. Universal remote: A universal remote can control multiple devices, including your television, cable box, and streaming devices, providing a more convenient viewing experience. Future Potential It doesn’t help, either, that the mist and clouding that hangs over dark scenes can sometimes take on a reddish or bluish tint that throws up an even greater barrier between you and what you’re trying to watch. Inevitably for a 50-inch TV costing this little, the 50UK4D63DB features a 60Hz panel. This, together with the limited bandwidth of its trio of HDMI ports, denies it any support for today’s 120Hz gaming graphics, at either 4K or HD resolutions.

There are, to be fair, one or two more picture areas where the 55QA5D63DB does pretty well. Its native 4K pictures are crisp and sharp (a touch too much in its Vivid and Standard picture presets, perhaps), and the sharpness doesn’t break down badly when there’s motion in the frame. Nor is there any of the overt smearing or excessive judder we still often see on budget TVs, even with 24p movie sources. The 55QA5D63DB’s speakers, which have been designed in conjunction with Onkyo, are seriously powerful, making it one of the flat-out loudest budget TVs we’ve ever heard. Potentially undermining these hopes, though, is the 55QA5D63DB’s use of an IPS type of LCD panel rather than a VA one. This means, based on past experience, that it may remain enjoyable to watch from a wider viewing angle than VA rivals, but will likely struggle to deliver serious contrast. The Toshiba UF3D has a variety of connectivity options that make it easy to connect to other devices. It has three HDMI ports, which allow users to connect multiple devices, such as gaming consoles or Blu-ray players. It also has a USB port for connecting external devices. Try not to watch from more than around 30 degrees off axis if you don’t want to see a significant reduction in contrast and colour saturation. The 50UK4D63DB’s smart features are delivered by Toshiba’s own Linux-driven platform. This is tidily presented and pleasingly uncomplicated in its approach, and also ties in with the TV’s regular picture and sound set-up menus really well. In fact, while we’re obviously not talking about levels of brightness even close to those the best OLEDs or, especially, premium LCD TVs can produce, the 55QA5D63DB is bright enough to deliver comfortably the biggest escalation from SDR to HDR of any TV in its price class. The 55QA5D63DB’s Dolby connection extends to Dolby Atmos audio decoding too, while its onscreen menus include a surprisingly broad range of picture set-up options – including various tweaks for Toshiba’s proprietary ‘Tru’ Picture Engine video processor. For the most part, though, the impact of many of the provided adjustments is pretty limited. Some of the features are so inscrutably named and poorly explained, too, that it’s actually pretty much impossible to figure out what they’re supposed to do.

Three HDMIs dominate rather than the four you can generally expect if you step up a couple of hundred pounds, and none of these three HDMIs supports the latest premium gaming features of 4K/120Hz or VRR. The 50UK4D63DB also follows its 50UK3163DB predecessor in achieving a genuine 4K feeling with the sharpness and detail density of its pictures. It maintains that clarity better than most when there’s motion in the frame, too, and while it’s naturally at its best with native 4K, it upscales HD very credibly and naturally for such an affordable TV too.All new sets across all four ranges are set to feature the TikTok TV app built-in, allowing you to watch content from your 'For You' and 'Following' feeds on the big screen. The picture quality of the Toshiba UF3D is exceptional. The television delivers stunning and lifelike images with its 4K Ultra HD display and HDR technology. The colors are bright and vivid, and the sharp contrast makes even the smallest details visible.

There’s no local dimming system to deliver local light controls, but this isn’t surprising at all at the 55QA5D63DB’s price point. The Toshiba UF3D comes with a remote control that is easy to use and has a streamlined design. It features dedicated buttons for popular streaming services, making it easy to access your favorite content with the touch of a button. The remote control also has a built-in microphone, allowing users to use Alexa’s voice commands without pressing a button. Connectivity OptionsThe Toshiba UF3D comes with a range of accessories. These include the remote control, batteries, power cable, and user manual. Additionally, the television comes with a stand that can be easily attached to the television. Users can also choose to mount the television on the wall using a VESA-compatible wall mount. VS Other Brands Unexpectedly, the TV is actually detected by the Xbox Series X as supporting VRR (though only up to 60Hz, obviously). However, running VRR into the TV actually causes more screen tearing rather than reducing it as you’d expect. So much so, in fact, that it’s best not to think that the 50UK4D63DB supports VRR at all.
