Description

Neolithic remains have been found in the parish, as well as fossils in the chalk. Notwithstanding the ‘hare of Harefield’ shown in the picture above, the settlement’s name probably derives from the Old English words here (army) and feld (open space; field). The name may thus allude to an encampment by a Viking army during the Danish invasions of the 10th and early 11th centuries.

A gold plaque in the Royal British Legion Hall honours the exceptional bravery of both Goodlake VC and Ryder VC. In 2011, Hillingdon Council erected a blue plaque in honour of the courage of Kinross VC at the place of his birth on the anniversary of his birthday, 17 February. The mitral valve is a small flap in the heart that stops blood flowing the wrong way. When it gets leaky, it can cause shortness and breath and fatigue – and in some cases, heart failure; a leaky mitral valve can have a big impact on quality of life and life expectancy. The UK has the lowest rate of mitral valve repair compared to other similar countries in Europe and the USA. I believe we perform more minimally invasive cardiac procedures than anywhere else in the UK. Why minimally invasive? It’s an exciting and fast-moving area of cardiac surgery, which research indicates gives better results than conventional methods. Sir Michael Shersby, MP for Uxbridge from 1972 to 1997, is buried in the churchyard along with his widow Lady Barbara. The new Edwards Intuity valve, which is also made from cow tissue, has all of these advantages too. It doesn’t need stitches as it’s held in place by a fibrous ring at the base of where the original valve was. The new valve is fixed to a stent (tube-like mesh) made of stainless steel which holds it under the fibrous ring.

Heart surgeons are performing more and more procedures that are less invasive; on the other hand, interventional cardiologists are undertaking more procedures in the catheter lab. J. Cotton, J. Mills, G. Clegg (1986) 'Archaeology in West Middlesex,' Echo Press, Loughborough. pp.29–31 The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) took a trip to the hospital, only a five-minute walk from the village’s minuscule town centre. Despite catching many doctors and nurses in the canteen, it was clear the strength of feeling about ULEZ was not so strong amongst hospital staff as it was in Harefield at large.

In 2018, we performed the world first minimally invasive mitral valve, aortic valve and CABG – all in the same operation. In the 1930s Harefield became an isolation hospital for tuberculosis patients, laying the foundations of its expertise in lung conditions. In the late 1940s the hospital became part of the new National Health Service and began to develop its expertise in heart disease, in addition to its lung specialisation.

Uxbridge council built nearly 500 houses between 1919 and 1951 around the common and in Northwood Road, and in South Harefield and Mount Pleasant. Subsequent development, both public and private, has been tightly constrained by the inclusion of almost all the surviving farmland within the greenbelt.Recently, I added another minimally invasive procedure – radiofrequency ablation, which uses radiofrequency energy to destroy a small area of heart tissue that is causing rapid and irregular heartbeats and restores your heart's regular rhythm – without having to open the chest. The topic of ULEZ is like blood in the water to people in Harefield, with Mr Gupta’s account prompting residents coming in for a lunchtime coffee to give their two pence on the matter. One resident launched into the conversation, saying: “I don’t know anyone that thinks ULEZ is a good idea.
