I think (and hope) that the author’s intent was to show that he was more than that on the inside but that no one gets to know him well enough to figure that out. She has two sons; Charles, who is married to Joanna, and Scott, who was adopted and never quite fit into the lives of the "upper crust" family. I thought this book moved way too slowly and had a lot of moments that were supposed to be very dramatic that didn’t feel authentic to me. As the community falls apart, the food runs out and the positive points of the place slowly fade away so finally Iris decides to leave.Wyllie gives her characters very well differentiated, individual voices and realises them through their thoughts, reminiscences and observations about the world (and each other).
