Letter Writing - Children can write a letter of warning to Lord Monteagle, from a mysterious stranger, warning him of the Gunpowder Plot. They could also write a letter from King James to a friend after the plot has been uncovered. How does he feel? What would he do next? Remember, Remember:

If possible take them to a Catholic church, or invite a priest in to talk about the differences in beliefs. Explain to the children that Catholicism is no longer illegal in the UK and that the Catholic and the Anglican Churches now work together on many issues. Ask children to discuss why it is better to work together even if you don’t always agree on everything.Should people be allowed to practise any religion they believe in? Rosary Prayer Activity: Shape Poems - Using their senses, children can write a shape poem about a Bonfire Night experience they have had. Remind them to include lots of onomatopoeia for the sounds of the fireworks and/or the bonfire. Compare Monet’s work with other paintings of the Houses of Parliament; for example, ' Westminster Sunset' by Albert Goodwin, ' Reflections on the Thames' by John Atkinson Grimshaw and ' The Burning of the Houses' of Lords and Commons by J. M. W. Turner. How are they similar/different? What techniques did the different artists use? Houses of Parliament:Catholic and Protestant- Discuss with children why Guy Fawkes and his friends didn’t agree with King James – to be a Catholic in Britain in the 1600s was illegal. Both were Christian, but different types of Christian: Catholic and Protestant. Ask the children if they believe God would have wanted Guy Fawkes to do what he did. Why might blowing up the Houses of Parliament and killing the King not have been a Christian thing to do? Was the King James’ decision to have Fawkes executed the right one? Houses of Parliament - Use the Houses of Parliament series of paintings by Claude Monet as a stimulus for children to explore colour, texture, line and form using pastels. Make a display of their work alongside information they have researched about the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben or the Gunpowder Plot. Newspaper Report - As part of their learning in history, ask the children to write a newspaper report about the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. They could use hot-seating in history to interview Guy Fawkes, King James and other key characters. Parliament - Children can research the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben to make a fact sheet to accompany their landscape paintings in art and computing.

Remember, Remember - Get the children to practise ‘Remember, Remember the 5 th of November’ rhyme to which they could add actions to make into a performance poem. When explaining the differences between Catholic and Protestant beliefs show children a set of rosary beads if possible. Children can make their own rosary beads and find out what they are for using the Rosary Prayer activity.
