I generally like Guy Delisle's work, but this collection of short stories from the late 1990s and early 2000s just didn't work for me. Too many of the attempts at humor rely on absurdity or nonsense, and it's almost all flights of fancy instead of the nonfiction stuff for which he has gained renown. World Record Holders ranges from wistful childhood nostalgia to chagrined post-fame encounters, touching on formally ambitious visual puns and gut-busting what-ifs. Delisle again and again shows how life is both exhilarating and embarrassing. Delisle visits an exhibition of his work in another country and is confronted by an angry spouse who blames him for destroying her marriage. A juvenile game of Bows and Arrows turns menacing as arrows shot straight up in the air turn into barely visible missiles of death. A coded message from space creates different reactions from different people—debates, dance festivals, gallery shows. Translated by Helge Dascher. Andrew Wheeler is an Eisner and Schuster Award-winning comic book writer from Toronto. His work can be seen in Wonder Woman, Dungeons & Dragons and Shout Out. There is much tongue-in-cheek wit here — thanks in no small part to translators Helge Dascher and Rob Aspinall — revealing a playfulness to Delisle that is often lost in his weightier observational humour about places like North Korea and Jerusalem. Take the story ‘Youri and Youri’, for example, where two astronauts representing our race and an alien species may or may not have switched places due to a cosmic accident after spending years in suspended animation. ‘Sweet Revenge’ documents a century-old fight between a mulberry tree and maple tree growing beside it. There’s an axe involved, and a slow battle that is supposed to end with the mulberry tree destroying its enemy within the next 38 years. There’s nothing like these tales in Delisle’s oeuvre, and it points to a path he might have walked down. Helge Dascher is a frequent translator of Delisle's comic books. She's also translated Aya by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie, White Rapids by Pascal Blanchet and Paul Goes Fishing by Michel Rabagliati. Graphic novelist Guy Delisle brings readers into the heart of places both close to home and around the world Jamal Campbell is a comic book artist from Toronto. He's also the artist behind the Far Sector comics, written by N.K. Jemisin, and has contributed to series like Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Justice League of America and Nightwing. When observing the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim populations that call Jerusalem home, Delisle’s drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. Jerusalem showcases once more Delisle’s mastery of the travelogue.
