Description

Of course there are plenty of hints, but will you be able to figure them out or will you be in the dark until the end? Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children’s / Delacorte Press for sharing this one of the most anticipated books’ digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

I just finished reading the book and so many feels are tumbling so I may be confused and wrong in the text above, but that's what I am feeling and wanted to express it to you. Beside the summary, I like the writing style, it was rich and beautiful and I would recommend this book to readers out there. It's a very dark book and I assure you that you will find it very interesting. It is true I do not suffer fools.Poor little Cadence Sinclair is wealthy. She is loved. She is one of the Sinclairs, a good-looking "old-money Democrat" family, think the Kennedys, without the political aspirations. They have names like Liberty, Taft, and Tipper. They go to Ivy League schools. They have trust funds. They have sired a generation of children, the leader of which is Cadence. Cadence and her crew call themselves "The Liars." The Liars are composed of her cousins Mirren, Johnny, and the outcast "Healthcliff," Indian love interest, Gat.

Okay so where to begin. I liked this book, you can see it by my rating, but I don't feel it ended right. I am not saying it was a bad ending, not at all, I enjoyed it, but there was no justice.

Quite a few secrets come out which I enjoyed, and it all followed through well. There wasn’t anything that didn’t make sense - at least to me anyway. Hedeen, Katrina (May 6, 2014). "Review of We Were Liars". The Horn Book Magazine . Retrieved June 9, 2015. This story is told through many concise sentences, which are often out of sequence, but this review will attempt to tell the story in a linear fashion. Cadence Sinclair Eastman is almost 18. She lives with her mother in Vermont. Her father left the family when Cadence was 15. His leaving shattered her world. This tragic, gripping, well written, thought provoking story, heart wrenching, twisty story will deeply affect you and shake you to the core!If yes, I hope you’ll enjoy the book as much as I did. It was a really nice and fast read and it definitely exceeded my expectations.

I loved how the book was structured so that it began with the earliest summer Cady could remember, right up to the present. This way of structuring the story really gave a sense of growth and familiarity between the reader and the characters. Subtle clues were hinted at throughout the chapters yet I didn’t spot what they were leading up to until towards the end of the book! I thought the descriptions of the liars were lovely and I suppose the only thing that was sometimes a bit confusing were the descriptions of Cady’s emotions; it often took me a moment to realise that she was talking figuratively, since the descriptions seemed so literal! In the summer Carrie is 17, her cousin Yardley comes to stay - brining her boyfriend and two of his mates. Things are about to change in a big way. Cadence is the granddaughter of Tipper and Harris Sinclair, wealthy elite of New England. Every summer Cadence spends her vacation on an island off Massachusetts, which is owned by her grandparents. She revels in the freedom of the island and loves to spend time with her cousins — Johnny and Mirren — and their family friend, Gat. Johnny’s mother’s boyfriend is Gat’s uncle. Cadence instantly formed an attachment to him when they met roughly nine years earlier. This is a book you’ll have to experience for yourself! And I want you all to scream: ”WHAT THE FREAKING HELL!!??” when you finally reach the ending. Haha!

Need Help?

Throughout the book, there are little stories that I believe were written by Cadence that seem to relate to her life stories and what she is coming up with and learning about throughout the process of rebuilding her memories and relationships.

As Cadence ever-so-gradually begins to recall the events of her 15th summer, the reader also discovers that all is not as it seems on Beechwood Island. Definitions of family, of loyalty, and of acceptance are all deeply tested --- and Cadence must redefine for herself what she believes in and stands for. Although I found this story entirely unique, if I had to compare, I’d say its structure reminds me a bit of On the Jellicoe Road. Its haunting tone, as well. This story left me defeated, but its tragedy was paired equally with an unconventional beauty. It gripped me instantly to the point where I couldn’t stop thinking about its mystery… We Were LiarsParents Guide This book does include strong language, as well as topics like drugs, mental illness, death, and racism. Later into the book it got became very dark.Sarah Odedina, Hot Key MD, says : "Everyone at Hot Key Books is so excited and energised by having this breathtaking book on the list. It is a one-sitting heart-pounding read. It is quite simply unique and we know we are going to have a spectacular time bringing it to the attention of readers." It is such an intricate book and what makes it so difficult but clever is that it is all about family dynamics which can be difficult for the most part. June of the summer I was 15, my father ran off with some woman he loved more than us." Cadence Sinclair, the teenage narrator of We Were Liars, initially seems very familiar: quirky, perky, sentimental and charming, blessed with an unusual name and a neat turn of phrase, surely she's going to lead us on a tale of unrequited love studded with witty one-liners. And indeed she does, but her story soon descends into much murkier waters, eyeing its teenage protagonist with a twisted smile and a tragic sense of the pain wrought by selfish, self-absorbed adolescents. If you want to read We Were Liars, don’t read this. It has a massive spoiler from the very first sentence. It definitely fits more into the sequel category, though it is set before WWL. If you have literally no interest in We Were Liars but a strange feeling that you want to give this one a go, I would say it works as a standalone. It’s very different from WWL in the best way possible, it stands on its own two feet and tells its own story.
