In recent tournaments, FIFA, in conjunction with Coca-Cola, takes the new trophy around the world before the upcoming World Cup. It gives thousands of soccer fans the chance to experience football’s most coveted prize with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the trophy themselves.

Mr Denis Follows, secretary of the Football Association, described the theft as “most distressing” and said it cast “quite a cloud over our preparations for the World Cup.” One such replica was also given to Nelson Mandela before South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2010. It was the only instance of an individual receiving an official replica of the trophy to date. There were gold plates attached to each of the four sides of the base, on which the winning countries’ names were engraved after each edition. The Jules Rimet Trophy. After Brazil received the guardianship of the trophy, it was kept on public display in a bulletproof case at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. Even though four men were convicted of the crime, the 3.8kg trophy was never recovered. It is widely believed that the gold-plated sterling silver trophy has been melted and sold. On March 20, 1966, the trophy disappeared from its display cabinet while a Sunday church service was being conducted in another part of the building. The thief reportedly never touched rare stamps, estimated to have been worth over three million Pounds at the time, and fled with just the trophy, which at the time was valued at 30,000 Pounds.

The weight of the FIFA World Cup trophy is 6.175kg. (13.61 pounds). The weight of the Jules Rimet trophy was 3.80 kilograms (8.38 pounds) The Brazilian team won the tournament for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by Jules Rimet in 1930. [14] It was put on display at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass. [15] Companies such as Mappin & Webb, Asprey and Tiffany & Co have departments dedicated to trophies and it’s not unusual for a sponsor or sporting body to devote a six-figure sum to silverware. ‘All of ours are handmade at our workshop in Bond Street – the [football] Premier League trophy takes 700 hours to create,’ explains Mr Gamble.

The old trophy’s exciting journey didn’t end there as it ended up being stolen on a couple of occasions. The first incident took place in England ahead of the 1966 World Cup. The Jules Rimet Trophy was put on a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall on 20 March 1966, when the theft took place. Bellos, Alex (2003). Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life. London: Bloomsbury. pp. 342. ISBN 0-7475-6179-6. French sculptor Abel Lafleur designed the Jules Rimet trophy in 1930. The trophy specifications and measurements were 14 inches (35 cm) in height and weighed 8.4 lbs (3.80 kgs). The famous prize was made of gold-plated sterling silver, and it had a blue base made of lapis lazuli stone.Jules Rimet Trophy [ edit ] Jules Rimet Trophy replica on display in the English National Football Museum. Produced by Bertoni, Milano in Paderno Dugnano, it depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. Gazzaniga described the trophy thus, "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory". [18] Classic Football History of the FIFA World Cup". Corbett eventually went on to hand the trophy over to the local police station and was detained for a while on suspicion that he might have been involved in the theft. He, however, had an alibi and got the clean chit. The trophy was eventually retired when Brazil won the World Cup final for the third time in 1970. Following their success in Mexico, Brazil was allowed to keep the trophy permanently, as per the plans laid out by Jules Rimet. Where Is The Trophy? When the local British Army regiment departed a few years later (and, perhaps more crucially, the bar ceased to be free), the club was disbanded and the 270 silver rupees remaining in its bank account were melted down, then crafted into a cup to be presented to the RFU for ‘some lasting good for the cause of Rugby Football’.
