Description

The AI algorithm in the unit monitors the 'Stop and Go' function, which automatically activates when your vehicle is stopped behind another vehicle for longer than five seconds at a red light. When the car in front moves off at the green light, the MioFive announces this in a voice message, advising the driver to follow. This can be useful, although it can also become mildly annoying when you have a journey with a lot of stop/start traffic signals, so it's a relief that this feature can be easily turned on and off. This equates to approximately four times more detail than non-4K cams, moving the footage considerably closer to a 'human eye' experience. The lens array in the MioFive is particularly interesting, with a set of seven glass lenses and F1.8 aperture to capture footage in vivid high definition. You’ll need a little time to fiddle with the power and connection cables, running them into the gaps around the edges of your windscreen using the small plastic crowbar tool provided. However, it's a simple enough task for anyone to do. Capable yet accessible, Thinkware’s X1000 comes bundled with everything you need to record front and rear. Our tests found a lot to like about the X1000. Its best attribute is its ease of use: with a large 3.5-inch touchscreen and icon-based interface, it’s simple to configure and there’s no need to rely on a smartphone partner app. GPS: This feature could be the tipping point if you use your captured video to resolve a dispute. Watermarking the video is common, but when embedded into the video, GPS info is also immensely useful for mapping your travels. GPS will also automatically set the time in better cameras.

Intriguingly, the MioFive's screen actually displays an ultra-wide vertical viewing angle of 160°, so you can see more than the cam is capturing. It's a lovely-looking screen, with strong, bright colour and good contrast, rendering the images more consistently visible in changing light conditions. It's not a touchscreen, though, so you have to make control adjustments via the buttons at the side, which are a little on the minimalist side. For the most part, you’ll likely keep the Miofive Dual Dash Cam in its Loop Video mode, which is continually recording one-minute clips. There are other video types including Emergency Video, Parking Guard and Time-Lapse. While older models typically required the user to manually save or tag the appropriate clip in the event of an accident, new G-Sensor-based incident detection technology has taken over, and now takes care of this automatically. The captured footage is impressive. In terms of clarity and detail, it’s a cut above anything we’ve seen, although it’s a toss-up whether the extra resolution of 4K or the faster frame rate of 1440p is more worthwhile. And you still get access to all of Nextbase’s advanced features, including Alexa connectivity and a Hyper-Sync Wi-Fi connection to the MyNextbase smartphone app. You may not need a dash cam that comes with 4K resolution or various smart features. But at the very least you're going to want a camera that records good quality video and can automatically detect whenever you get into an accident.High dynamic range: It sounds like a feature for a high-end digital camera, but HDR capture can be an advantage in very bright, high-contrast lighting. You don’t drive for a living: Most road users don’t need interior recording, so unless you’re ferrying passengers for pay, you might find better value elsewhere. However, 4K footage takes up a lot of space. Each one-minute portion of video captured by the Miofive weighs in at about 250mb when transferred to a smartphone, which means the integrated 64GB of storage is good for 4.5 hours of recording. This should be plenty, but the large size of 4K files is worth considering if you intend to record a lot of footage and transfer files frequently. Verdict

HDR(high dynamic range) isn’t necessary, but it does make for more detailed video because of better contrast. It also generally indicates richer color.Aimed at those who spend extended periods behind the wheel, the Nexar Pro is a dual-cam solution that can record video both inside and outside a vehicle. Comprised of two separate camera units connected by a cable, we found the setup to be pretty neat, even if it took up a fair bit of screen real estate.
