I don't know much about Salamanders and I couldn't connect with this tale because I didn't understand that much about them. Gav Thorpe - Renegades - 3/5 It's avenging sons story - to my knowledge doesn't connect to any previous publish tale. However, many of the stories were a little disappointing for me, not really capturing the essence of the Adeptus Astartes. If you read the Ultramarines omnibus then this book contains one story which is more ore less the introduction to possible sequel (The Skull Harvest).

It starts off as your average spess mahreen fluff but as the situation grows dire the space marines slowly crack under pressure and do some heinous things. So a Black Legion's Scaevolla has a grudge against the imperial fists and so he hunts and kills them. I want a book about the heroes of the space marines to actually be about the heroes of the space marines.

Ten stories, with 5 of them being focused on Chaos Space Marines hardly makes for a "heroes" collection, but aside from that, the book was good.

The second story is `Gauntlet Run' by Chris Roberson which follows a squadron of Imperial Fist Scout Bikers as they race an Evil Sunz force across the desert. The story has a nice plot with some good twists and a nice cameo from Huron Blackheart, one of my favourite 40K special characters. This is very straightforward tale on crimson fists helping imperial guard while on their own mission. This tale - don't know what it has to do with Heroes of Space Marines since it focus solely on chaos space marines and how they get more warriors under their belt. One Hate' by Aaron Dembski-Bowden - Crimson Fists aid the Imperial Guard while on a mission of their own. All of those are the heroic Space Marine fluff style stuff that makes me want to die a hero, and that is exactly what I was looking for when I cracked the book. Renowned as some of the staunchest defenders of humanity, surely it is inconceivable that marines of the Crimson Fists Chapter would ever shrink from bringing death to the Emperor's enemies?

Honour Amongst Fiends by Dylan Owen never got going; and Fires Of War by Nick Kyme was as utterly boring as anything else he's done. Finally One Hate is a rare example of an Aaron Dembski Bowden story that doesn't hit the mark, the crime in this case being that it's not very interesting. The final story in this collection is `One Hate' by Aaron Dembski-Bowden which although good is something of a retread of `And They Shall Know No Fear. It features a prequel story to the Salamanders Series by Nick Kyme, a tie-in to the new Imperial Fists series by Chris Robertson, and new Deathwatch and Night Lords stories, and more. Young men take part in a Chaotic ritual that they don't truly understand, but one thing is for certain: the only victors will be the traitorous Night Lords.Better than that Soul Drinkers nonsense, but not as good as the Ultramarines series, or Brothers of the Snake. For someone who's halfway through the Horus Heresy, a few of the stories were spoilers-lite, but nothing egregious. by Darren Cox follows a squad of Black Templar Sword Brethren as they try to gain access to a Chaos held fortress. This anthology features an Ultramarines series tie-in by Graham McNeill featuring the Iron Warrior Honsou, a prequel story to the forthcoming Salamander series by Nick Kyme, a tie–in to the new Imperial Fists series by Chris Roberson and all–new Deathwatch and Night Lords stories, setting the stars ablaze with the fury of the Space Marines.
