At a separate ceremony in Falmouth cemetery, family members of Leading Seaman Bill Savage VC (MGB 314), and Motor Mechanic Tom Parker (MGB 477) laid wreaths at their graves. Bilek, Tony; O'Connell, Gene (2003). No Uncle Sam: The Forgotten of Bataan. Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press. ISBN 0-87338-768-6.

A feature film was made of this venture, with the title "Glory at Sea" and the alternate title, "Gift Horse," to add still more irony. A book about the raid by David Mason is much better than the feature film that seems to have been strapped by a low budget. I reviewed the film on IMDb.com, if anyone is interested. The movie was shot in 2002 but it was pulled from its original 2003 release schedule on several occasions. It was finally released in August 2005, by Miramax Films, which coincided with the formal departure of co-founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein from the company. [ citation needed] Wynn's boat was offered for the raid at the last moment. The ML consumed a lot of petrol and was capable of only two speeds: a slow 6 knots and a fast 33 knots. [21] The flaw meant the ML could only float by leap frogging and waiting. It was clear she would need a tow if taken in that condition. The flawed boat brought disapproval, necessitating last-minute modifications. [21]

Captains Jimmy Fisher and Robert Prince and several Filipino guerrillas a few hours before the start of the raid The Japanese had initially planned for only 10,000–25,000American and Filipino prisoners of war (POWs). Although they had organized twohospitals, ample food, and guards for this estimate, they were overwhelmed with over 72,000prisoners. [2] [3] By the end of the 60-mile (97-km) march, only 52,000prisoners (approximately 9,200American and 42,800Filipino) reached Camp O'Donnell, with an estimated 20,000 having died from illness, hunger, torture, or murder. [3] [4] [5] Later with the closure of Camp O'Donnell most of the imprisoned soldiers were transferred to the Cabanatuan prison camp to join the POWs from the Battle of Corregidor. [6]A new HMS Campbeltown, a Type 22 frigate, was launched on 7 October 1987. [82] She carried the ship's bell from the first Campbeltown, which had been rescued during the raid and been presented to the town of Campbelltown, Pennsylvania, US at the end of the Second World War. In 1988 the people of Campbelltown voted to lend the bell to the new ship for as long as she remained in Royal Navy service. [83] Lee laid a wreath in honour of his grandfather and said: “I’m very proud of Gerald, my grandfather and his part in the St Nazaire raid onboard HMS Sturgeon. The Falmouth 80th Commemoration is a fitting tribute to the bravery of all the Sailors and Commandos of WW2.” James Franco wrote about the making of the movie in his novel Actors Anonymous. Parrott, Lindesay (February 6, 1945). "Japanese Cut Off" (Fee required). The New York Times . Retrieved July 26, 2011. I loved this book, as I love any good adventure story sublimely told . . . a gloriously exciting high, followed by a crushing realisation of war's enormous waste' Gerard deGroot, The Times They lost four men in this action. The fifth team also succeeded in completing all their objectives, but almost half their men were killed. The other two commando groups were not as successful. The MLs transporting Groups One and Two had almost all been destroyed on their approach. ML 457 was the only boat to land its commandos on the Old Mole and only ML 177 had managed to reach the gates at the old entrance to the basin. [47] That team succeeded in planting charges on two tugboats moored in the basin. [48] Sources differ on the numbers. In the London Gazette account of the raid the Admiralty states there were 353 Royal Navy and 268 Commandos.
