That aside, if you want a small kettle that can get to multiple temperatures, this is a good choice. It’s fairly easy to use, too: hit the 100°C button to boil; hit 85°C to start at this temperature, and then the + button to increase temperature by 5°C. Our only complaint is that 85°C is quite a high starting temperature, which is good enough for hot drinks but not, for example, baby bottles. Still, as the screen shows the current temperature on the screen, a boil can be interrupted manually at a lower level. We've found some brilliant cheaper kettles, and some terrible, expensive ones, so paying more doesn't guarantee a good result. The iKettle 3rd Gen has a built-in water sensor that sends information to the app to alert you if there’s not enough water in the kettle. With a simple glance at your phone, you can easily decide if the iKettle needs a refill. You can even use the app’s Wake Up Mode to wake you up via an alarm and start boiling water at the same time.

There’s only one small niggle with the Structure kettle overall – the simple fact you’ve got to remove the lid to fill it up, but other than that, it’s a great and rather affordable all-rounder that looks great. Moreover, its 1.7-litre capacity is great for gatherings big and small, as is the fact it can boil one cup at a time for ultimate precision, or if things need to be done on a person-by-person basis. The Structure Kettle is also a fast boiler, taking roughly two and a half minutes for a litre, four minutes for full capacity and for one cup, just 45 seconds.

The best kettles you can buy in 2023

Specifically, the incredibly incremental temperature controls – you can dial up or down by 1 degree – are largely pointless. Say you set it to 80ºC, the kettle will boil to that and give an audible beep to notify that it’s reached that temperature. But then the water will keep heating, typically to 7-8ºC higher than the target temperature. From the essential to the optional, here are some of the key features to consider when choosing a kettle. Minimum fill/one-cup boil Combined with this, as a specialist appliance, it is a slower boiler than most, taking around four and a half minutes for its positively dinky 800ml capacity. Unlike some larger appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, only a small portion of a kettle's environmental impact will come from day-to-day use. You can make a big difference by opting for a kettle that will last you a long time before it needs to be replaced.

However, we’ve found that the savings aren’t all that they seem. Hot water taps, while convenient and stylish, are expensive to buy and often have hidden ongoing maintenance costs which outweigh any potential energy savings. This is a 3kW kettle, which means it boils as fast as UK electricity will allow. It boiled 250ml of water in just 48 seconds, from start to finish.

Aside from also being able to tell Alexa to turn off the kettle if you decide you don’t want it boiling, that’s it for your voice commands. I really wish the kettle could offer a readout of its capacity; otherwise, you need to keep jumping into the app – or, heaven forbid, get up and manually look inside the kettle to ensure there’s enough water for your next cuppa. Should you buy it? Kettles aren’t the most high-tech of kitchen items, but it’s worth looking out for safety features such as an auto shut-off function – should you accidentally put too little water in the kettle, this will stop it boiling dry. And we would avoid buying any cheap kettle that has a mains cable connected directly to the jug itself, as the slot-in stand design of most modern kettles is far safer. Where the Pour Over is really useful is with its variable temperature selection, available in one-degree increments. No matter what type of drink you want to make, then, you can get the perfect temperature. It’s also a super quiet kettle thanks to that slow boil, meaning it won’t disrupt any conversations.

The iKettle 3.0 uses something called BlinkUP to transfer your wireless network details to the kettle’s base. On its underside is a sensor that can detect the flashes of your smartphone to determine the correct settings – a bit like fancy morse code. Simply tap your network settings into the app, after which it will ask you to hold your screen against the sensor on the base. More and more kettles are offering variable temperatures now. This is great for making different types of drink. For example, coffee should never be made with boiling water, as it burns and gives a more bitter taste. And, multiple temperatures can be good for other jobs, such as making a bottle for a baby or filling a hot water bottle without having to add cold water first. One very basic thing to look out for is how a kettle is filled: a button-operated flip-top lid is worth having as it means you don’t need to put your hand anywhere near the spout (or any steam coming out of it) when you’re refilling it. Some users have also reported that the iKettle has a tendency to suddenly disconnect from their Wi-Fi network. A stable network connection is needed if you want to enjoy continuous use of the iKettle. But, once it’s properly synced with your smart hub, making hot drinks couldn’t be simpler.

A loud whistling kettle can be really annoying, particularly if you have an open-plan kitchen/living area. Some kettles are marketed as being especially quiet, but this doesn't always hold true. Well priced for a multi-temperature kettle, this is a good kettle in its own right, with the smart features a handy bonus. It’s all relatively easy to follow – but, unfortunately, I experienced the same problems we saw with the iKettle 2.0.
