Since I did this about two weeks ago, the number of gnats definitely appear to have lessened both at home and in the office. I have been misting less frequently in an attempt to dry out the top substrate, and am wondering if that caused the springtails to move deeper into wetter substrate. My first instinct after writing about this plant so many months ago was to toss the plant in the trash, but I felt that would be conceding victory to the gnats. DO NOT apply soil drenches to plants under stress or follow applications with excessive amounts of water.

formulation used in the experiment was almost safe to 4 species of nontarget organisms comprising of tadpoles, Buffo melanotictus; earthworm, Pheretima posthumo; fresh water fish, Cyprinus carpio and millipedes, Julus sp. Here's the cool thing about it--because humans, animals, birds, and fish have acidic and not alkaline digestive tracts, the Bti toxins don't have any effect on us. After ingestion it breaks down the intestinal walls and the larvae stop feeding and die within 24-72 hours. Apply it to the top 2 inches of soil as a drench every 5 days until the adults are not flying around anymore. Once the gnat larvae ingest the active ingredient, they become paralyzed and stop feeding; the larvae usually die within 24 hours. It's great to 'cycle' if you start getting gnats but it's not a systemic or chemical pesticide that stays effective much past its application. For any requirements specific to your State or Tribe, consult the agency responsible for pesticide regulations. Do not apply this product in a way that will contact workers or other persons, either directly or through drift. This effective, naturally occurring larvicide kills damaging gnat larvae in less than a day and brings infestation levels under control.

I introduced a few new plants and the gnats must have hitched a ride because soon I had an infestation and it was getting progressively worse. There was also no interaction effect of insecticide and hybrid found for any of the species evaluated. You can use Gnatrol OMRI in greenhouses and various interior plantscapes to protect ornamental and vegetable crops. Gnatrol WDG Biological Larvicide is OMRI certified Larvicide gnat control contains bacillus thuringiensis, a soil-dwelling bacterium that targets gnat larvae and kills them before they cause plant damage. t. to species of several invertebrate taxa (Acarina, Nematoda, Collembola, Annelida, Hymenoptera) inhabiting the soil has been demonstrated, but only rarely is it possible to relate dosage information to field situations, and in many cases the B.A LD50 study (by definition is going to kill half the test animals) is not an appropriate indicator for health effects if a normal dosage is expected. The infestation for that had gotten so bad that I enclosed it into two sandwich bag, partially to serve as a greenhouse, but partially because there were so many gnats coming out of this plant it was clear that the roots were thoroughly infested. The product is now available in a water-dispersible granule (WDG) formulation that leaves no residue and is easier to measure, ensuring increased application accuracy.

I read threads that mentioned gnats as a temporary nuisance but I wonder if that is because dart frogs will eat them! In my case, the gnatrol was effective and I would recommend it if you are experiencing gnat infestations.

Gnatrol WDG (Water Dispersible Granule) biological larvicide offers the same effective control of fungus gnat larvae that growers expect from Gnatrol, but with added product benefits. I put a fresh set of yellow sticky traps over each plant to see how effective the treatment will be. As I said earlier the product/chemical used in the study cited is NOT the product/bacterium I was referring to.

You'll find that most of us here are very conservative when it comes to risk to frogs, so even a link to harm is enough of a red light. plants can't use the nutrients in soil directly; they need the micro-organisms which turn the nutrients in the soil into bioavailable form. Although adult fungus gnats are a nuisance to people, they don't damage plants or bite humans or animals. Over the course of the following few weeks I added plants and seeded with dwarf white isopods and springtails. At 75ºF, eggs hatch in about 3 days, the larvae take approximately 10 days to develop into pupae, and about 4 days later the adults emerge.I just wanted to mention my positive experience using Gnatrol (a biological control [Bacillus thuringiensis] for fungus gnats). Once the larvae have ingested Gnatrol, they become paralyzed, stop feeding immediately and die—usually within 24 hours.
