Royal Mail has unveiled a selection of stamps celebrating beloved Aardman Animations characters including Wallace and Gromit, Morph and Shaun The Sheep. The Bristol -based animation studio was founded in 1972 and is best known for its films using stop-motion and clay modelling animation techniques. We have had the pleasure of creating these films featuring these much-loved characters over the last 40 years, so it is a real honour for the studio to receive this royal stamp of approval. The Aardman Classics stamp issue, released on October 19, is a celebration of the creative genius of British film studio Aardman Animations, which has been crafting beautifully detailed and humorous films in its instantly recognisable stop-motion style for almost half a century. Aardman was co-founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who were friends at school. Their first films were animated on the Sproxtonsʼ kitchen table, and they were still teenagers when one was shown on BBC television. In addition to the eight stamps, an exclusive miniature sheet, created specially for Royal Mail by Aardman, will also be available.

Raised by a family of mice, Robin the robin tries to prove to them that she can be a really good mouse, but ends up discovering who she really is, in the Christmas short film Robin Robin, made in 2021. This was Aardmanʼs first stop-motion film to use felt puppets rather than clay figures. Royal Mail has today revealed a set of stamps, celebrating Aardman’s most popular and beloved animated characters. It is the first in a series of planned videos to be released during 2022 that will allow customers sending stamped mail to choose which one the recipient can see when they receive an item of mail. At the moment, a video featuring Shaun the Sheep, created exclusively for Royal Mail by the animation studio Aardman, can be viewed.Criminal genius and penguin impersonator Feathers McGraw adapts Wallaceʼs new invention, ‘Techno Trousersʼ, as part of his devious scheme to steal a diamond in The Wrong Trousers, made in 1993. Stop-motion animation utilises three-dimensional models made from flexible materials, such as clay, often built around a wire skeleton. They are moved in tiny increments, usually 12 times for every second of film, giving the companyʼs films a distinctive hand-made feel. First day covers and stamp cards are available as usual, along with a press sheet of 12 unguillotined miniature sheets. Wallace and Gromit foil the scheme of a criminal mastermind in The Wrong Trousers, a short film made in 1993.

Key moments on the stamps include those from Wallace and Gromit animated short films A Matter Of Loaf And Death, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and A Grand Day Out. The sheet stamps are self-adhesive and free-form, each design being die-cut with one or two extruding elements. The miniature sheet is conventionally gummed and perforated. A selection of Royal Mail stamps, each with a beloved character created at Bristol's Aardman Animations have been unveiled today. The limited edition collection will go on sale next week, and includes a miniature sheet for collectors.

The codes match the stamp colour and sit alongside the main body of the stamp, separated by a simulated perforation line.
