I was told that "several" companies make foam sleeves that slide over the existing cable housing to damper the rattling. Internal cable routing is pretty standard kit now, but those cables are often free to move about inside your frame, turning the thing into a musical (if sonically awful) instrument. Like a banjo, basically. Rough terrain causes the chain to slap against the frame. Assuming your chain is the correct length, and you’re not ready to splash out on a clutch derailleur and narrow/wide chainring, the first thing to do is make sure your chainstay armour is up to scratch. Dashboard vibrations are probably the most annoying sounds your vehicle could ever produce. If your car is generally a rattletrap, one more source of noise probably won’t be a huge problem. I put it on the inner rubber seal interface, on the metal not the rubber, so the seal shuts of against the felt strip rather than the metal work. Hope this helps. Even though those clips make it easier to remove those trim panels, they’re also notoriously loose. It’s a problem most car manufacturers have noticed, which is why they often put anti-rattle padding around them. I cut a grout sponge (or car wash sponge) into about 4 pieces and stuffed them into the downtube, evenly spaced. No more rattles. Easy to pull out with a flexible claw retrieval tool.
